SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST IS, 1866.
THE DESERTED HOMESTEAD.
tie garde!
Swing, creaking in the idle wind;
And weed, choke np the graveled walk.
That erat with pink, and box were lined;
And foietlea flonriah everywhere,
And briar, thrive where rose, blew; >
And opiate poppies make the air
Smd drowsy when the HIBes grew.
The porch, where loving hands had trained
The prairie bush, whose blossoms red
Freighted the air with pleasant scents,
Is fallen, and the buh is dead;
Wide yawn the window, and the doom,
The chimney totters on the roof,
And mow mid ivy deftly now
Weave over nil a war p and woof.
Untouched the frnttfal trees decay;
Uncared for dies the climbing vine—
No hand to pluck the mellow fruit,
No hand to prow the purple wine.
And where the household inmates came
To quaff the water clear and cool.
Naught now remains of bubbling springe
l brackish] '
Save slimy stones mid 1
i pool.
Here undisturbed the swallows come.
And robins with their ruddy breasts;
And here the droning wasp and bee
With cunning skill contrive their neats.
Ue spider trails its fragile web
Athwart the heavy oaken beams;
And constantly the death watch ticks
Within the wainscot's dusty Nome...
And those whose voices echoed here,
Whose feet had pressed the garden walk—
Who shall of their long absence tell ?
Or who their wanderings can mark ? >
Their voices may be hushed for aye.
And feet that respite never knew
From weary walks in life’s long day.
Hay have the gates of Heaven passed through!

—General Fullerton, it is understood, goes
to St Louis to enter upon the practice of law.
—The Prussians levied upon the inhabitants
of the conquered provinces for each soldier
eight cigars per day. The war will not how
ever, end in smoke.
—Gen. Grant has rescinded his order of
February 17, for copies of newspapers to be
sent to him which contain disloyal senti
ments, etc.
—The Cincinnati Commercial says : “Hon.
Thomas J. Turner, Chairman of the Repub
lican State Central Committee of Illinois, has
departed from the feith, and gone over to the
Johnson party.”
—It has been decided by one U. 8. Com
missioner Parker, residing at Buffalo, that a
man cannot roll tobacco leaves into the form
of a cigar, and smoke them himself, without
taking out a government license as a cigar
maker.
-A Canadian soldier was recently con-
cted of complicity in the Fenian conspira-
4jy, and on being drummed oat of the service
^boated “hurrah for the Irish Republic.” He
Was then re-arrested and flogged in the pre
sence of the members of his late corps,
yi —The negroes of San Francisco have been
-Jesting their right to sit among white folks at
\|he theatre. A judge holds that a proprietor
lias a right to enforce such regulations as will
Mbe most conducive to the prosperity of his
business.
—A party of one hundred and forty-seven
disbanded California soldiers lately sailed for
Sonora from San Francisco, well armed and
with plenty of ammunition and money, under
command of a Capt. Burney, who has a com
mission as Brigadier General in the Liberal
army.
— A lady residing on Massachusetts ave>
nue, in Indianapolis, the other day com
menced tickliog her daughter, a girl fourteen
years old. She continued this amusement
until the girl became completely exhausted,
and finally, in struggling to free herself,
burst a blood vessel and died.
—According to the estimate of intelligent
gentlemen in Mississippi, who compose an
association|for collecting data as to the cotton
crop of that State, one-fonrth of an ordinary
crop would be an extravagant estimate of the
cotton that Swill be made in Mississippi this
year.
—Among the recent inventions in ftance,
which have been brought to light by the dis
cussion on the needle-gun, is one which fires
twenty balls a minute and has a musical box
in the butt, thus doing away with the neces
sity of regimental bands.
—There are now said to be employed in
the several departments at Washington about
five thousand clerks. The number just at the
close of the war was twice as large, but with
in a few months many have been dischaged.
There are thousands of applications for places
on file at the various departments, though
the situations, taking all thinga'iiito considera
tion, are by no means desirable.
— General Robert E. Lee is not writing a
history of his campaigns for publication, as
has been reported, but he will publish iu
November s new edition of “ Memoirs of the
War in the Southern Department of the
United States, by Colonel Henry Lee.” It
was originally published in 1809, and again
in 1828, but copies are very rare. General
Lee will add a biography of biff father. Col.
Lee, and much new aucT important matter.
—The expansive hoops of an Officer’s wife
recently attracted much attention among the
Indians in Minnesota. Even the curiosity of
the older braves was excited, which was
finally relieved by the whispered explana
tion of a yonng squaw over whose shoulder
n lively papoose of some nine months was
peering. The men vamoosed, mattering
low, gutteral grunts, while the more sprigbt :
ly squaws tripped off; chuckling their pa
pooses under the chin, with very significant
twinkles lurking in the deptbe of their dark,
lustrous eyes, which seemed to say, “ can’t
fool us.”
— The proprietor of a restaurant in Phila
delphia last Wednesday caught a rat which
was running around the room with a clam
attached to its tail. The rat had been in a
box containing clams, under the counter, and
one of them had caught hold of it by the
tail and would not let go. The rat endeav
ored in vain to crawl into its hole; the dam

STOMACH BITTERS
Are the only Medicinal Tonic in the World of which
that fluid is the stlmolatfog ingredient.
To Dyspeptic Sufferers.
Under the general head of Dyspepsia may be classed
all the varieties of Indigestion. Its symptoms are
so various, and differ so much In different individuals
that it is almost impossible to dasriiy them. In fact,
some of them are utterly Indescribable. It may he
safely asserted, however, that half the diseases of
mankind spring from 4. disordered condition of the
stomach; and that the other half, whatever their
origin, react upon that sensitive and Important or
gan. Among the ordinary indications of Dyspepsia
are flatulence, a bloated and fnll feeling about the
stomach and abdomen Immediately after eating, a
gnawing sensation or a sente or hollowness at the
pit of the stomach between meals, a heavy doll feel
ing in the head, feeble or analeady appetite, occa
sional nausea, restlessness daring flight and a weary,
nurefresbed feeling on risingtn the morning, palpita
tion of the heart, depression of mind, sometimes
amounting to [aanuaaaaU, leas of memory, confu
sion or thought, sour stomach, with raising of food,
and a choking sensation in the throat, dimness of
eye, pain in the diaphragm, feebleness and disincli
nation for exertion, aad sometimes emaciation and a
corpse-like pallor. These are a few of the direct
signs of Dyspepsia, bat as it is generaily complicated
with specific affections of the bowels, the liver aad
the Leives, its victims have many additional torments
which are technically attributed to other canses.
Thff best advice that can be given to any one who
has tbo slightest predisposition to Dyspepsia, ta to for
tify his or her digestive organs by the daily use of
Hostetter’s Bitters.
The disease proceeds from a lack of vigor In the
stomach, and this vitalizing preparation will tone
and renovate that organ. If the gastric apparatus is
in good working order, and can perfectly dissolve
and thoronghly assimilate the food submitted to its
operation, there will be no Dyspepsia. If It caflflot
do this, it requires reinforcement, and the best of all
reinforcing agents shoald be forthwith resorted to.
The stomach is the commfeeaitet of the system. It
supplies the element, of life Id the whole body. Id
It Is prepared the material pf blood, mhsCle, bone
and fibre, and if it foils to purvey that material in
quantity, and of a proper kind, tbe whole body suf
fers, and with it the mental faculties. Therefore pro
tect the commissariat department. Don't let the en
emy obtain possession of it. It is easier to prevent
disease from getting into an organ than to expel it
after it becomes a chronic fixture. Consi-ler the
first Indication of unsasiness in ths stomach as a
sign that Dyspepsia Is preparing to Attack, and baffle
It at onoe with the GREAT RBPSLLANT.
Bat ir It is too late to prevent, remember that It Is
not too late to cure. It is believed that there In no
case of Chronic Indigestion that can withstand the
remedial operation of
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters.
This belief is grounded cu twelve years’ experience
of the efficacy of the preparation. Tbe tret instance
of Its failure to give relief la yet onchronlcled. Iftt
ever had foiled, the volawtoooa correspondence ad-
dressed to the proprtetore from all parts of tbe United
States and South America, would at least include
one letter exprearing dtesattshrilnn Bat no, there
is not one. The testimony, extending over a period
of more than a dozen year*, to nil of the airproving
tenor. Certainly this is a ooRclsat warrant for
claiming that tha BITTERS are a SPECIFIC FOR
INDIGESTION IN ALL ITS VARIETIES.
