of the role, and his excellent singing won ~
and frequent applause. He was especially fins Im tha
third set, and throughout his powerful and flexible
voice told with thrilling effects Mmlle. Caniasa quite
astonished us by the great strides aha has mads lb
artistic excellence since we last heard Mr. Bar tswes
have greatly rounded and acquired volume, and the
thoroughness of her school shows very caistal.ead
conscientious practice. We think she will rank ooite
as one of the greatest artists of tbs world. It 1* to-
perfluous to mention that Alois. Patti atraikpsh. in
Siebel, looked charmingly, and she received b Thertiad:
sud enthusiastic encore in the flower song. Mephle-

good voice, and made a superb Valentina. Chorus,

themselves and contributed mnch to the genuine she-

with frequent encores and calls before tha curtain.
To-night Lucretia Borgia will be given with an ex
ceedingly fine cast, and below we give a synopsis of
this Interesting and beautiful open:
The celebrated Lucretia Borgia, to well known in
Italian history for her reputed crimes, was married to
Dou.-AZlifion.so, Duke of Ferrara; hated by her coun
trymen on accuunt of her numerous crimes, her ilia
wsa scarcely safe except within the principality of F*n-
rara; nevertheless, urged by maternal sSsaiiou, She
follows a young man named Gennaro, to Venice. Gen-
narp, brought up as the Bon of a poor flaherman, to
unconscious that the hauty, cruel, apd hated Lucretia
la his mother. Lucretia, during the celebration of
the Carnival, and while she removes her mask for an
instant, is recognised by the relatives of several other
victims, who. after proclaiming her name, depart
with threats. The Duke, (her husband,) haa followed
her to Venice: and suspecting a criminal love between
his Duchess* and tha young Gennaro. resolves to
sicriflce the latter to hts jealousy, as soon as he shall
have arrived at Ferrara, to which place they “
bound.
Gennaro - takes up his abode at Ferrara, near to the

he declares his hatred of the infamous woman, taow

The evil late of Gennaro prevails, and instead m Hy

We were permitted, yesterday, to listen to the^kffh ■
rehearsal of the new opera, Crispino. We oan Safely
say that there is a rich treat in store for our public.
The music is beautiful and sparkling, and the action
comic and highly interesting.
A propoa, as to the production of L’Africaipe, we
have seen some of the scenery that the management
brought ou here, especially the grand ship and the
tree, and can pronounce them as something wonder
ful—certainly, without exaggeration, the beat and
finest yet seen in our theatre.
