A Tennessee paper, giving ad- Tho preueber was discoursing on the
i this subject, says
text of tho "sheep nml tbo wolves,
"Wo foel ao if wo wire almost called and had evidently been drawing
to go through tho country and beg contrast between tho two subjects
and imploro our farmers to plow deep.
Wo noticed last your whoro tlioro had
been deep plowing and otherwise prop
er culture, there wore good crops of
corn and cotton despite the drought;
where tho plowing was shallow there
was a failuro. A deop furrow receives
tho rain and retains it an a reservoir,
and the plant is not drowned by the
Hood nor parched by drought."
And the Macon Telegraph, taking
up the samo argument, gives a case to
sustain its position: "A small planter
cultivating mostly high, samly soil,
has, to our huowlodge, in twenty years
never missed u fair crop of corn for
such land, among ail tho droughts
which havo nfilictod tho country, sim
ply because his furrows wore about
oiglit inches deep; and the true expla
nation of all the drought-bliiHted corn
crops in this region is, thut tho land
was broken scarcely to tho depth of
three inches, and tho seed ilroppod in
furrows no duepor. Corn will strug
gle long and lustily against drought,
with half a chunco for its rootlets to
creep about in search of water and
nutiimout. Where tho error of shal
low plowing 1ms been committed, then
a free u-o of tho bull tonguo while tho
plant is yet small will give it u better

Of Life Insuaroco is gradually nnd
deservedly gaining public attention by
the force of its own merits. Tho time
is not fur distant when the denth of a

leave thy stain of neglected duty upon
his character. It is a duly whirl
one owes to his ow n dependents
and to the community. He who neg

his power so easily to provide against
such coulingonckn.
