The South and its Future*
Oar people have sutfured so much
financially and politically since the
dose of the war, that if it can he shown
there is good grounds for hope of an
early improvement in business and the
condition of the South in general, it
will not only contribute? to their pres
ent happiness, but it will inspire them
with new zeal aud energy and thus ma
terially aid in bringing about results
■0 much to be desired and so essential
to the future prosperity of our section
of the country,
That for the future we shall be free
from political trouble and oppression
on the part of the General Govet-nraci t Street Bros,
is, we thiuk, beyond doubt. After I for $-10,500; O. M _ f w ,

Charleston. January 1.—-At 3
o’clock this morning the lnrge cot
ton press and warehouse of the Uo-
iou cottou press company were de
stroyed by fire together with 10,-
121 bales of cotton.
The property comprised four
cotton presses with a capacity of
pressing 2,500 bales of cotton per
diem aud storage room for ovet 10,-
000 bales.
Only two of the presses were run
ning. The buildings aud piesses
ar»» valued at ab nit $100,000, in
sured for $00 0U0.
The lo-s on cotton is estimated
at $755,000, Ou this there is an
insurance to the amount,of $472,-
250. The losses are, Knoop, llune-
man & Co., 3, 305 bales—insured

from the South; we need therefore,
have no apprehension of the enactment
of laws that will bo injurious to our
■option. Moreover, if the Democratic
party can harmonize ou a financial pol
icy, just an honest in principal, wo
think there cun be little doubt that the
next President will he a Democrat, and
the people will then have assurance
that the laws will be faithfully and
impartially administered in all sections
of our country.
We are aware that a great many
people firmly helieve, or perhaps we
should say fear, that we will again be
cheated out of the President*, but for
this apprehension there is little or no
cause. With the Senate and House

Thursday afternoon, Mrs, W. P.
Burt, wife of Dr. W. P. Burt,
was driving home from the com
mercial part of the city, and when
opposite the residence of Dr. W.
W. Barlow the reins were caught
uuder the horse’s fail. In her et-
of Representatives under the control J forts to jerk them out; she leaned
of Democrats, the outrage and. fraud too far forward and was kicked in

Wo think the financial prospect is
fully as cheering as the political. Out
people sure #om putatively free from
debt, and there is q§ necessity for
them to isi^ur any large amount of in
debtedness. TFhe, cotton is very low,
but so also is every thing else. One
bale of cotton will * now purchase ms
much land and the necessaries of life,
u when it wm selling for twenty-five
cents per pound. Moreover, our posi
tion of the South, is such that, witli
the exception of coffee, we can pro
duce evevy thing that is necessary for
our natural wants; if is therefore at
our option whether we will keep the
proceeds of our cotton crop at home
and build up the industries aud udd to
the capital of our section, or continue'
