In company with Capt. James
Vaughan, the contractor, we visited the
family burial ground of Col. Lewis
Tumlin, on Thursday last, and inspect
ed a beautiful monument placed over
our young lamented friend, Samuel S.
Tumlin. It is a plain monument of Ital
ian marble, surmounted with a shield
—nothing more, at a cost of about
S3OO. CaptjVaughan is prepared to put
up box Tombs, Monuments, head and
foot stones, to order. He keep3 a
specimen book in which may be found
about 100 designs. Those in search
of marble statuary-, would do well to
call and examine his specimens. He
can and will put up anything in his
line as cheap, or cheaper than it can
be done elsewhere.
Bt&P Mr. Guthrie has received his
fine “French Cottage Soda Fountain,” |
and will have it in operation in a few J
days. “Oh ! won’t that be joyful !”
He lias also some genuine Rasberry i
syrup, direct from Boston—there is j
no discount on it; in fact, ho keeps 1
none but the best.
The weeekly prayer meeting j
will be held at the Methodist Church
to-night, (Wednesday;) we bespeak a
large attendance of our citizens, as i
well as members of all the churches;,
if all need prayer, and all who
believe ™ it, will attend, the house
will be filled. We say, then, to all go
up to the house of the Lord.
gentleman, of this place, being so j
charmed and fascinated by the ladies who j
were perambulating our streets, a few days
since, received the afflatus and broke forth in ;
the following lay :
Ah Woman! Woman! blood and thunder! j
When she smiles at me, I goes under.
B@k~At the request of many, citizens,
we published a call for a meetiug of
the same, at the Court-house, at 10
o’clock on Saturdfv morning,, last, to
take into consideration the importance
of buying a fire engine, and organizing
e Company. Oa Tuesday night the
ult., our town was visited by an
other fearful conflagration, in which
some of our citizens suffered severely.
Much has been said about the impor
tance of taking steps to protect, our
town against fire, bat wo are sorry to
say, without any effect. We thought
certainly this last disaster would be a I
sufficient warning to our people tq urge
them to fortify against this evil. Con
sequently the call was made at once,
but unfortunately a day or two after
wards our town was visited by a very
refreshing shower of rain, which we
fear effectually cooled them off. At the
appointed hoar we resoried to the
place designated, but happend in too
late to be present at the meeting. We
met up with Pompey Milner, who gave
us the information that he had met
and resolved himself into a committee
of the whole, and adjourned the meet
ing, sine die, to all of which we yielded
our hearty assent, and returned to our
place of business impressed with the
flattering prospects of having to do in
future, as we have in the past —with-
out an engine or a company. There is
no doubt but that we are a public
spirited people.

Tt is not necessary to journey from the
tropics to .Alaska in order to experience the
extremes of heat, anil cold. Thousands un
dergo all the inconveniences of this tlier
mometrical change every day. or every oili
er day. as the case may be, without the troub
le of moving over the threshold. A word
with these involuntary shakers. What are
they doing to expedite their return to a me
dium temperature?—to break the chills and
banish the fever? Are they dosing them
selves with quinine, thereby imperilling the
soundness of their bones and impairing the
vigor of their brains and nervous system ?
Some of them are, no doubt, but not the ma
jority of them, it is believed. The value of
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters as a harmless
and certain specitio for fever and ague is
understood and appreciated in all parts of
the country where interinittents prevail.—
The residents of such localities begin to take
early in tlie spring as a protection against
tlYe misasina by which they are surrounded;
no| all of them, perhaps, for a blind adher
ence to error is the specialty of some people,
bul the greater number of them.
If there is any fixed fact in therapeutics,
itjris this: that the Bitters are a far better
s/feguard against all the varieties of the pe
modic maladies produced by unwholesome
/xhalations than any drug or compound in
the materia mediea of the profession. This
assertion is made with all due respect to the
faculty, but being an important truth, and
one that nearly concerns the health of large
settlements iu various parts of the country,
and indeed of the public at large, it is made
fearlessly. Founded on ample and unim
peachable testimony, it defies disapproval.
To breakup chills and fevers, as well as
to prevent them, there is nothing so reliable
as this wholesome vegetable restorative,
I have used Dr. Simmons’ Diver Regulator
iu my family for Dyspepsia and Sick Head
ache and regard it as an invaluable Remedy
iu these attacks. It has not failed to give
relief in any instance.

Our readers will be equally rejoiced witn
us, to know that the commissioners appointed
by the Legislature of Kentucky to take
charge of the Enterprise, have positively and
irrevocably fixed the 4th day of July as the
time when the drawing will take place at
Masonic Temple, Louisville, Ky. The cor
respondence between the proprietor of the
enterprise and the commissioners is pub
lished, and has the true ring of honest in
tegrity, for which all the parties have ever
been noted. These gentlemen stand foremost
among the noble citizens of the grand old
Commonwealth of Kentucky, and we know
that their course will be universally ap

A WRONG IMPRESSION CORRECTED.
Many persons believe that there is no
value in anything that does not come from
‘ the North.” How humiliating ! However,
this impvnssion is being gradually corrected.
It is now admitted that no remedial Agent
has ever been discovered, North or South,
that possesses, in so eminent a degree, the
power of eradicating from the system all foul
distemper, as Dr. Tutt’s Sarsaparilla and
Queen’s Delight. The secret is, it assists
nature to do this through its own channels . It
is composed of vegetable substances alone,
every one of which grows on Southern soil.
It is the Blooi Purifier of the age.
