Since our last issue, we have had
some delightful showers in this, and

brought up coin and cotton and have
1 ecu highly beneficial to the Ofti crop.
Indications point to good crops in this
ilk, this year.
Ho! For ti:e Pic-Nicl—We learn j
that our enterprising Railroad friends
of the Carte rbfille A Van Wert Hail
road, propose to carry out to the Eto
wah River, those who desire to attend
r. Pic Nie, on Tlmrs l ay week; the
hanks of the Etowah are dense’y sha
ded, ami sweetly rippling water, and
perhaps a boat-ride, w.ll add zest to
the other pleasures of the place. Each
family cun carry a basket (f good
things to cheer the fnner man, and a
“feast of reason and How of soul,” will

"We learn that the generous officers
aiid managers of the Railroad offer to
carry the pieknicera free of charge,
which speaks well for their generosity
and kindness of heart. It has been
thought that a small charge of say,
25 cents each, might, be collected, and
the sum thus taken be divided among
the Subbith Schools of GVtersville,
for the purpose of purchasing books for
their use.
Business has improved during the
last week. We saw quite a number
iu town dealing, who-came a.conshfer
able distance for that purpose. The
simple truth is, that there is a large
stock of goods here, and prices are re
freshingly low to buyers. We sav to
the peopl ■*, in good earnest, Unit here
is the place to get back the value of
your money. Come and see, for our
Station is full of live merchants.

building, covered with slate, owned
by Messrs. Stokely & Williams, acted
as a break-tire, and saved, iu our opin
ion, at least, $50,000 worth of proper
ty. The Railroad will soon be finish
ed to Van Wert, and slate will be
brought here at such rates, that all
houses can be cheaply covered with it.
No(v is a good time to subscribe for
the “Express ” A county Fair has
been organized, and all farmers ought
to have their county paper, as much
valuable information pertaining to the
Fair will be published—a list of pre
miums, prices of admission, &c., and
those who have removed to other
State3 should have a paper from Bar
tow County, so as to know what is go
ing on at their old homes. Subscrip

amount, and we will make it worth
the money to yon.
Extraordinary Speed. —The train on
the Cartersviile & Van Wert Railroad,
coming up from the river, on Tuesday
last, struck a tangent and run at the
extraordinary speed of 1| miles in 80
seconds. Those who were aboard the
train represent that it ran almost as
smoothly as a boat glides over the pla
cid lake on a calm evening. This is
•certainly ft rare feat over a railroad
bed and track that ha* only been con-
within a month past.
OUR FAIR GROUNDS.
We stated last week that the Ex
ecutive Committee of the “Bartow
County Agricultural Association” had
selected the Fair Grounds ou the C. &
V. R. R. We had the pleasure, on
Monday evening last, in company with
(■apt. D. W. K. Peacock, Secretary
and Treasurer, together with Messrs.
Hunt and Harris, Civil Engineers of
visiting and inspecting the ground,
and must say that the location cannot
be surpassed in Bartow County. The
grounds are located ou the Cassvilie ;
Road, just opposite the old Methodist
grave-yard, containing between 25
and 30 acres. It lies beautifully, there
being a slight elevation up next to the
road admirably adapted *„>r the build
ings and amphitheatre, while the bal
ance is almost us level as a H >or, where
can lie obtained, a race-track of half a j
mile’s length. Petiit’s Creek runs
through one corner of the same, along I
which may be erected the stalls for
stock. In 60 yards of the Fail-
Grounds, the Railroad crosses the Cass
vitic lio id, where is a suitable place to
deliver visitors, arwl things designed
for exhibition. Distant from the j
Court noose about one mile.
In another column will be found n
call for the payment, by the Stockhold
ers, of an installment of one-fourth of
turn* stock. Work will shortly be
commenced to prepare the grounds
t an animal Fan’, in October next.— |
We will soon publish the premium list,
iu fciie meantime, let everybody be pre- j
ptrrog to furnish something for exhi
bition.

are given: About eleven o’clock the
Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia
was crowd and with eminent citizens, and
nyinv local politicians and a great
man* of the public at large who were
drawn there by curiosity to hear the

The frim/ds of Messrs. Ellyson and

the gallery of the court room, which j
was ciowded, fell in. The floor fol- j
lowed, and thereon descended thirty ft.
to the floor below, which was the floor
of the House of Delegates of Virginia, j
on which some few of the members of a
caucus were waiting around. There
was a genefal crash of all the timbers,;
and the falling in of the inside wall, in
which were killed Patrick Aylett, Capt.

them was one Captain, one Sergeant
and nine privates of the police, who
were oil duty in the building.
Amongst the wounded were ex-Gov.

Directly after the disaster occurred,
the fire alarm was used to give notice,
and the hook and ladder companies of
j the city repaired at once to the scene.
A cordon of police was drawn around
I the building, and the ladders were
thrown np to the windows. For three
hours after that the scene was full of
j horror. A minute after, there ap
! peared swung out by a rope, tied
| around the middle, the body of some
; popular favorite, who, after being put
I on top of the shoulders of one of the
tire brigade, mangled and dead, were
brought down the ladder into the green
I of the public park, where it was in
stantly surrounded by two or three
thousand of those who had gathered to
recognize the slain. The park was full
of anxious, weeping women and aux
j ions men until two o’clock, when the
! last body was drawn from the building.
After this the police closed the park,
refusing admittance to any one, the
bodies of the dead having been sent
out. All the stores iu the city were
closed, and placards put upon all the
doors, “ closed in consequence of the
disaster” disaster at the Capitol. No
more business was done during the
day. To-night meetings were held of
members of the Press Association, the
members of the late military
tions and members of the Bar, and of
the citizens generally. To-morrow will
be observed as a day of mourning.

Mr. Editor:—Having noticed your i
article about the fire, in your last issue, i
in which you were pleased to bring my i
name —in connection with one other— j
very prominently before the public. I
desire to make a short reply through
the same channel. Now, Mr. Editor, I
am very much obliged to you for the
kindly feeling displayed in your very
flattering notice* But my notions of
justice, will not permit me to remain
silent, and thereby seemingly assent to
what you said. I did what I could to
stop the spread of the fire—and I be
lieve every other man present did the
same thing. But Ido not think that I
did more than a great many others;
but ou the contrary, I do believe there j
were many others, who, by tlieir cool
ness and experience, were educated to
do more effective work thau myself—
But where all did so wi 11, I do not ;
think proper to particularize, hoping it
will be a long time before we will have
another like opportunity of displaying
our ‘heroic’ conduct.
Yours, truly,
J. G. M. M.

Buchu, as prepared by Druggists, Is of a light color.
It is a plant that emits its frsgrance ; the action of a
flame destroys this (its active orincipie.) leaving a
dark and glutinous decoction. Mine ill the color of
ingredients. The Buchu 1n my preparation predomi
nates; the smallest quantity of the other ingredients
are added, to prevent fermentation ; upon inspec
tion, it will be found not to be a Tincture, as made
in Pharmacopoea, nor la it a Syrup—and therefore
can be used in cases where fever or Inflammation ex
ist.. In this, you have the knowledge of the ingredl
ents and the mo ie of preparation.
Hoping that you will favor '.t with a trial, and that
i upon inspection it will meet with your approbation.
With a feeling of confidence,
I am very respectfully yours,
