One of the bloodieat fights on record
occurred In Robertson county, Ten

i nothing more Dor lees than Journal's Washington correspondence,
of tho 30th : H .
Gen. Grant has prepared his regie*
tratlon ns Ucnctnl of the Army, and
will tender It to President Johnson
nsnlly wise, since by such a system
of hr,Hasting tho cost of keeping up
the Bond would bo gieally lessened.
Ho also recommends tiiat the net earn
ings of tiie Bond for tho next twelve
months he expended to ronko It first
class in nil its departments, which
may or may not bo wiso; nnd also all
ocates the fencing of the Bond and
recommends that each adjacent land
owner and tho Bond divide the expense.
Tho Superintendent says tho Bead
from Dalton to Tunnel lllll is now be
ing fenced, as nn experiment, to see
whether It Is cheaper to fence or pay
for stock killed, Oiir opinion (If we
mny bo allowed to express it) is that
tho thing is highly Impracticable, for
tho renson that after the ltoad ia once
fenced, which would take an immense
amount of money, It would require a
very heavy yearly expenditure to koop
the lino of fence in repair.
, The Superintendent maintains that
there is no. Justice In requiring roads
to pay for stock accidentally killed by
trains, since It is net reasonable to
suppose that a locomotive driver would
wiilrutly endanger Ills own life by pur
posely running over stock; and calls
for legislation to prohibit' stock from
running at large*upon tho lino of rail
ways. In his rcpoit ho also argues,
and with ability, that roads ought not
to be compelled to pay the 'claims of
employees for injurlos sustained while
on duty, and Is very caustic In his re
marks on the pronaness of juries to
decide against a Bond in Sueli esses.
Taken altogether, the report of Col.
Hulbert is highly interesting, and
his recommendations ably sst forth.—
That he Is thoroughly acquaintsd
with railroading in all its ramifications
has been fully evidenced by Ills judi
cious management of the Hoad thus
far; and should his administration
throughout he marked with a disposi
tion to consult tho public weal by an
economical expenditure of the earn
ings of this great work, the people, Us

this latter kind we witnessed a few

Cut Feed roa Horses.—Not a few
farmers keep their horses on lmy alone.
It is altogether better, as woll as equal
ly as cheap, to cut a portion of the
hay, and add thereto the worth of the
remainder which they would cut, in
the shape of cob moal, or, what is bet

Few horses fed entirely on hay live
to be a dozen year# without having a

willing to work when stuffed with any
fodder, as one whose food is richer
aud of smaller bulk.
Beside, when eating dry hay, the
horse is inclined to drink beyond his
need, and beyond what is best for
him; so much so that rapid or even
