N. F, Cooledgc & Cu„ him: undertaken
an enterprise, which, prtibably, is tho first
of tho kind in Georgia. Mr. Cbolodgc
lias been Fast some time procuring
nil tho necessary maclilnoy for the whole,
rale manufacture of boots and nliOeSi the
capability of \yhich will be about 500,000
Worth per annum, and tho establishment
will be rmi to its full capacity If tho peo
ple of Georgia and the .South will sustain'
it. Their first manufacture will bo of
the more atonic article of lieavv slock
>Kioto and shoes, tho material of wliieh
they will manufacture theihselvcsi They
will sell to local merchants and tho goltpral
jobbing trndc atduplicato prices with any
other market in tho United States,-North,
Fast, IVcst or South, nnd tho stock will
ho of the best, their leather having here
tofore closely competed with tho best In
the New York market, and from Dvo to
eight cents above quotation of Southern
leather, it selling on its ou merits and not
at ruling prices. There is no doubt but
tho Front of Dalton Shoo Manufactory
will bc'n grand success, when boots and
shoes can and will bo sold In Dalton at
Eastern manufacturers, prlceB, and oven
much cheaper when wo tako into consid
eration the saving of a couple of dollars
freight on tho ease, from New York to
Dalton. The machinery will bo put up
immediately, In thcir bnllding, in the city.
The Rnllrnndu.
Tho work lias commenced on this
end of S. 11. nnd D. railroad; Col. IV. L,
Cook wants COO hands to work on it;
President White, with' his engineers, Is
now in tho mountains, determining the
most accessible crossing.
The'State road is doing a heavy busi
ness. Transferring, at this point heavy
The E. T. & G. road is feeding tho State
road with luorcased freight. Several now
engines for Georgia roads passed over it
during tho past week. . Never before was
it he re so much machinery coming over
these roads ns at present.
How to Nnkc n Town Grow—Our Hope.
While wo, with others, enjoy the ex
travagant predictions of the enthusiastic
mind, regarding tho probable future of
Dalton; wo can scarcely expect it to mount
the.wings--of progress, arid go up inn
night', Phoenix-like, ns if by the wonderful
powers of Aladdin's lamp. Some powerful
'prerequisite generally builds towns. It is
well to inquire, What has Dalton to pro
mote her commercial interests? We are
certainly riot favored With Magicians.
Itallroads do aotbaild,but merely developc
the resources which do. There is no town
•in .tho South with belter, present and
prospective, transportation faculties than
Dalton. Wo admit that the little oily is
amuming vast proportions; but it must
Strive n more healthful backing than its
present agricultural staml-hy. What wo
want to give the busy hum of prosperity
to Dalton is more manufactories. ■ Noth
ing of tho kind hero but whnt.puvs, nnex'
coedlngly handsome per cent, and those
who have tho money stand in their own
Sight by not investing it ill tills way. But
tiho greatest trouble is, every, one is wait
ingfor something• to turn up; men of
moans have a mania for decapitating the
cmforlunates who arc mixed up in sheriff's
sales, and taking-other advantages equal
ly ns contcinpttble. Why don't they put
their money into sonic .well founded en
terprise thut would pay them well, build
up the town nu<J give 'employment to tho
many who are now verging upon pauper
ism? Perhaps they can’t think of any
thing to invest in. Well, let us see:
If anybody here wnnts a now buggy or
oarringc, they must send to Atlanta for it,
probably imported there from New York.
An establishment of this kill'd would pay
a heavy premium.
The great demand for building material
jnthis locality would'make a general sash,
blind, door and lumber dressingestablish-
merit soon pay for tho machinery.
Just think What sluggards wo are—tho
New England States aetualy buy the grei n
lumber ; in Georgia and other Southern
States.iind shipdt.hundreds, of milqs “ter
hum,” .when: -they make it into wagon
hubs, spokes,' felloes', nxlo trees, standards,
trees, shoives, plough handles, axo and
lioo holvcs, broom 'handles, curtain roll:
era, ohiso! aridrilo haridfei,'.buckets, tubs,'
dough rollers, clothes pins, awl. hrimllfcs’j.
shoo pegs, and iu tiiet inany articles that 1
our country friends yvhittlo out with their
knives. These tilings Are roshipped South
again,.at immense .profits, enriching Yau-
fcecdom and—what Is' it doing, for us?
We keep up. their ship lines, build their
towns, pay taxes for the manufacturer,
and support their poor. Now all of
these articles could bo mado iu Dalton at
a smaller cost than in the East. Tho
machinery would hot cost teu thousand
dollars. Wo waiitacotton factory, a ma
chine shop, arid—if anybody wants to in
vest in manufacturing, wo will give them
»list of profitable investments as long as
tho moral law.
Manufacturing will build a town quick
er, strbuger, keep more life in it, and at
tract a larger population than anything
else. This is what Dalton wants to-mako
a town of it; and when we see tho work
commence we’U.prcdict something good.
Gone to Work nt Till: laid. •
Tho contractors of theSelma, Eomeaud
Dalton road, for this Division, were in the
city yesterday, and started, tho work re
building the old grade a few miles below
the city. The old grade continues about
sixteen miles, and thoro is hut little work
to do on it. Iron will bo laid doivii ns
soon as the road hod is got . ready and n
train put on it'. They want all the hands
-tlicycanget. Good wages aro paid. Tho
worst of tlio> work is done. t The bridge
across the Ooostanaula will bo finished by
the time the iron is laid.

When peats ttioreiuluai orillslovofl now dcrnl.
Dentil lms ngnlii inviuled our ranks, ami
wo -are,once more called upon to pay tho
last sad tribute of respect to our beloved
and worthy brother, J, N. Scott, who was
called to that eternal refreshment above,
August lflth, 1809, nged 07 years. When
the old man bowed down by tho weight of
years, goes leaning upon his stall' to tho
grave, we feel a kind of submission to tho
decree or Heaven. And when tho young,
bright nnd buoyant, with hopes of the
future, is snatched away even before ho
lms entered tho threshold of life, we can
also bow wllh resignation to tho will of our
Henvonly Father, lint when one In tho
prime of manhood, with tho trill vigor of
lilb and Intellect, around whom so many
bright liopeB wore gathering, and Horn
whom wo were receiving such a largo do-
groo of U8olrilness, 1b stricken down, wo
aro disposed to wandor, and sometimes
alinoft call In-question tho judgment of
Divine Provldoneo.
Poath at nil times olid under nil circum
stance is terrible to the human mind.—
But when it comes and singles out oiiq al
most lu tho prlmo of life, surrounded by n
young and interesting flimlly, nnd a largo
clrclo of frlonds, It causes us to exclaim,
“What Is man? ho comcth forth like, a
flower and is cut down; ho flecth also ns n
shadow and eonthiuoth not." Our broth
er and friend hns.bcon felled to tho earth,
and his spirit summoned to .that uuknoivn
country whonco no traveler, returns. In
his death Jrlasonty has lost a zealous mem
ber, for ho exoriipllficd most frilly llio beau
tiful symbols of our order. Society has
lost a bright exemplar; for he possessed a
heart ever open to the deinnudsof charity,
and the calls of friendship. And hlsftim-
ify have lost a support and guide, for he
was ever actively and industriously em
ployed, that ho might supply their wants,
aud administer to their comfort; and ho
most faithfully taught them, both by pro-
eopt and example, how they should live
and act In this life, that they may bo a
united family in the life to come.
But Ills is now the dreamless sleep of tho
grave, nnd to us is left tile sad privilege of
paying this feeble tribute to Ids memory,
and mingling our sorrows with his family
in the following resolutions:
Hcsolvod, That we most deeply deplore
tho death of our esteemed and worthy
brother, ,T. N. Scott, who so recently asso
ciated with us, ns oiic of our most acfiyo
and vigilant members.
Resolved, That wo tender to the widow
and family our sincere regard mid unaffect
ed sympathy under tills nfilietioil of Di-
vino Providence, which robbed them of'a
