How Monroe is Growing.
While great streams of north
Georgians are pouring into middle
and South Georgia, it is gratifying
to know that no Monroe farmers
are going anywhere.
As an .instance of how new
comers are settling in the county,
twelve new families will move into
one community of two miles
square, near Forsyth, this winter.
Knockers Thai Knock
Frequently some hypocritical
person, who has no sense of per¬
spective, criticises the papers pub
lished m small towns and insti¬
tutes unfavorable comparison wit It
those in larger communities. One
might as well compare the
paved streets of the country town
with the asphalt boulevards of
Washington or the one story brick
village business houses with the
latest Broadway house of trade, or
the little cross roads bank with its
$10,000 capital with the Standard
Oil’s National City Bank of the
metropolis.
As a matter of fact, the newspa¬
pers are generally fully on a paii y
with the towns in which they
are published. Given a town
where the people are working as a
unit, are progressive m spirit, am¬
bitious, pushing, determined, ea¬
ger to promote every enterprise
intended to develope and full of
that public spirit that does things,
and one is Bure to find a newspa¬
per vibrant with the same spirit,
eager to push ahead, expending
more of its menus and its energies
than the conditions actually war¬
rant.
Where conditions are reversed
the newspaper is more than apt to
soon relleet the town spirit. In a
larger degree than most pojplears
willing to acknowledge the news¬
paper is really the mirror of the
community life and spirit.
The local newspaper is of far
greater value to ‘the community
•
t iau any paper, no matter how
pretentious, how large Jand how
enterprising that is published else¬
where. The trouble too often is
that the people who “knock” the
local newspaper spend more money
on out of town papers than they
do 011 the home paper and they
wonder why it does not flourish
like the proverbial green bay tree,
The same people, as a general rule
are found knocking every public
project that comes up. They
saturated with the knocking spirit
and simply cannot help exercising
it at the expense of the place in
which they live.
All too frequently the local news
papers work against discourage
ment, override captious criticism,
ignore discordant elements that
war against progress, plead and
work for unity and give more time
and more money for the cultiva¬
tion of public spirit than any doz¬
en of those who. instead of pulling
and , pushing . . , h the . .
n it paper, join
mg forces with it in promoting
the public welfare, pursue the
m the manger policy of doing
nothing themselves and suupping
at these who are seeking to do
something.—Lx.
