THE “MABItLs” AND THE “ROUGE.”
London has its “Argyle Hall ” and “Cre-
morne Garden,” Vienna has its “ Sperle and
Albrombra,” but they are all low and disorder
ly places, which are never visited even by
respectable gentlemen. They are vicious im
itations of the Paris gardens, such as the
“ Jardin Mabille’' and the “ Elysee Montmar-
tree,” the “Chateau Rouge” and the “Clo-
serie des Lilas.” In these places the li
cense of the dance is not always confined
t<f the limits of propriety, though there is
nothing to be seen at any of them down to
the level of the artistic dancing on the stage,
or what is called the “leg drama.” In sum
mer the Parisians resort to similar establish
ments at the villages of Asnieres, Enghien, j tims of kingscraft, which requires standing
Lecaux, St. Cloud, Rambenillet and Mont- | armies, and draws the youth of the country

the orphan asylum, just as most
of their mothers were passed over in their
early infancy. The grisette, it will thus be
seen, is a feature of Parisian society that is
regarded as inevitable, and being inevitable,
those who raise themselves out of its slough
are not deemed to have been tainted or tar
nished in character. Those who pass
through life as grisettes are not regarded as
“fallen angels,” bat as women who are ful
filling their sad and unfortunate destiny, and
whose chances for heaven are equally as good
as those whose lots are cast in pleasanter
ways. So long as youth lasts they live a

Nothing like it h .s been seen cn earth since

It was a scene of the most vigorous and *
earnest dancing that human feet and limbs 1
could possibly be trained to. So also iu the
waltzes. They flew nrouDd so rapid that at a
short distance the twirling couples bewilder
ed the eye, and seemed Jike tops spinning in
the air. There was nothing of the “poetry
of motion” about this dancing, but rather
the “prose of locomotion” the highest
rate of speed being tbe object to be
attained. Still, we did not see anything as j
shocking to delicate sensibilities as the fa-!
mous danseuse performances at our most
fashionable theatres. The dancers undoabt- ;
edly enjoyed the dance, while the profession
als go through it as part of a laborious duty, 1
and we don’t know that any of the latter were
able i -i throw their heels as high as the gri
settes of the Latin Quarter. Tho best of or
der was preserved, and daring the prome
nades Lhere was but little to distinguish the
company from an ordinary assemblage of
well-dressed people.
There was a great many respectable French
people present as spectators, and an abun
dance c; English and American gentlemen,
but no ladies of either of these ADglo-Saxon
nationalities. At the Mabille Garden, how
ever, the English and American ladies out
numbered the gentlemen, as this is one of the
places in Paris which the ladies all persist in
seeing “just once.” Among the latter
we recognized the beautiful daughters of a
Northern Bishop, and any number of
“fathers and mothers in Israel,” with their
daughters. There is no use iu any one com
ing to Europe without seeing the people iu
ail their modes and phases ol life, and to see
Paris without visiting the Mabille, would be
like going to Rome and not visiting St.
Peter’s. “It is naughty, but it is nice,’’ and
