A Dash for Liberty.
THE DEVOTION OF A WtFBr-ONE OF THE MOST
REMARKABLE ESCAPES ON RECORD.
The Memphis Avalanche gives in full the
escape from the jail in that city of White, a
noted horse thief, which has already been
briefly mentioned by telegraph. In the after
noon on Monday, White’s wife came to the
jail to see him. A little basket which Mrs.
White had on her arm was searched, and
found to contain nothing except the material
of a good dinner for her husband. The door
of the reception-room was open, and the two
were observed talking together by several of
the officers of the jail. An hour or so after
ward, a negro man stated that he saw Mrs.
While lift the skirt of her dress and take some
thing—the nature of which he could not tell—
and hand it to White, who put it in his bosom.
The negro said nothing at the time, however, 1
and the officers knew nothing of it until after- j
ward. Alter talking for a half hour the two s
came out in the centre of the vestibule, where !
Whito affectionately kissed his wife, who :
turned and walked to the outer gate, while
White stood in the centre of the vestibule, a j
distance of twenty-five feet from the gate,
watching her. Guard Thomas Murray un
locked the gate, and swung it open wide so as
to allow the lady to pass through. Just as
she reached the centre of the gate, and while i
standing in such a way that it could not be
closed, she asked Mr. Murray, “ What !
time is it ?” The gentleman very politely j
started to pull out his watch to sec, '
when throwing up both hands high !
over her head, she cried, “Ban, Cap- !
tain White, run for your life.’* With the cry j
White made a jump toward the gate, drawing I
a glittering navy-six from his bosom, and i
just in three jumps was along side of Mr. I
Murray. Mrs. White was still standing in i

ack, while the letter jamui ed the barrel of j —
his navy-six against Murry’s temple and ran
into the street. Running rapidly to the cor
ner of Auction street, a distance of about j
thirty yards, he unhitched a large, powerful, j
dark bay hors**, and with a leap was on his j
back and away. Mr. Murry started to fol
low him up but was stopped by White,
who having reached his horse, leveled his !
pistol and said: “Stop, or you are a dead
man.” Not beiDg armed, Murray stopped.
Mr. Keilley, the turnkey, at the moment of
the escape was inside the gate, distant about |
twenty-five feet lrom it. Seizing large dra
goon pistol, he started in pursuit. In pass
ing through the gate he was seized by Mrs. i
White, who cried: “Don’t, oh, don’t kill my
husband.” Jerking loose from her he ran
out on Front street, and White was galloping
out Auction street, Stopping, he look aim ;
and fired at White, who ducked down on
the saddle and threw himself under the ‘
horse’s neck in such a way as to expose 1
only his left leg and arm. Taking aim
the second time, the cap snapped, seeing i
which White raised up and levelled a
pistol at Reillj', as if intending to fire, but j
changing his mind, gave one yell of triumph, j
and waving the pistoi above his head, went
od a dead run out Auction street and the New j
Raleigh road. News of the escape was at j
once sent Sheriff Doyle, who within a half ,
hour alter the time had four mounted deputies
on the road after him. Mrs. White was
brought back and locked up to await an ex-
ruination on a charge of aiding and abetting ,
the escape of a prisoner. The horse White j
rode was taken there by a negro about the]
time Mrs. White visited the jail, and was evi-
denlly left expressly for niru.

The Tools of Great Men.
It is not tools that make the workman, but 1
the trained skill and perseverance of the man
himself. Indeed, it is proverbial that the bad \
workman never had yet a good tool. Some
one asked Opic by what wonderful process he ,
mixed colors. “I mix them with my brains,
sir,” was the reply. It is the same with every i
workman who would excel. Ferguson made
marvelous things, 6Uch as his woodeu clock,
that accurately measured the hour—by means |
of a common penknife—a tool in everybody’s
hands, but then everybody is not a Fergu- j
son. A pan of water and two thermome- |
ters were the tools by which Dr. Black dis
covered latent heat, and a prism, a lens and a
sheet ot pasteboard enabled Newton to nn- j _ ^
fold the composition of light and the origin of ; W. JolmSOlTS Agricultural
