Oivc the Child a Chance.
SOME OF THE MISTAKES MADE 11Y PARENTS.
SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES. |New A dv-er tisements.
ATLANTA MEDICAL COLLEGE.
|1HE SIXTEENTH REGULAR COURSE OF LF.C-
Very often a child gets the impression that
there is something in his physical, mental or
moral condition, nnlike that of other children,
that places him at a disadvantage, and he is
disheartened at the thought. Very likely
there may be some peculiarity, but the
point is to overcome, and to teach him to
overcome that disadvantage, and to rise above
iL Unhappily, however, wo often aggravate
and increase the trouble by our course of
treatment. We deal with the child as rude
and thoughtle s persons do with one who
has a blemish on bis face, or sirne other bod
ily defect, noticing and commenting upon it
until h ri made tenfold more hard to be i
borne, and the sufferer made sensitive even j
to look upon his infirmity. A soldier who J
Lad lost a leg wrote ont some lifiy questions
with which he had been pestered bj imper- :
tinent persons concerning his loss, bow and
when it happened and how much he suffered.
And sometimes when there is any obliquity j
in a child, parents and brotheis and sisters ,
will bear down upon it, and twit him with it ;
in a way to aggravate and increase it rather ;
than cure it. They will say before his face
that he is an odd one in look, that he is pecu
liar, that he is foolish, that he has not the ca
pacity of the rest for learning, and that ho j
w\11 never be or do anything in the world, un- !
til the child himself believes it, and grows j
up under the discouragement thereof; and so ;
tto prophecy works out its own fulfilment, j
and Lo grows to manhood the very eccentric |
or useless ch trader it was foretold he would be. j
If judicious friends had noticed lightly his j rC qSrcdV
peculiarities, and taught him he was not so
very unlike or inferior to the rest, led him to
look more hopefully upon his case, arul ap
preciated and drawn out his real excellen
cies, he might have outshone all his kin. The
reputed dunce of the family and the school,
has often risen to high honor, to the aston- i byaddressing
i.-hment of his early compeers. Beautiful is
the story of “The Ugly Duck,” that, when a
fledgeling, was picked at and persecuted as a • ——-

Many a person, no doubt, has been helped j ilJ K* our month** tbereafte:
ou to the lunatic asylum by having his eccen
tricities of mind increased by wrong treat
ment, until the full result was insanity.
How many a person Las been kept down in
low station ot life, or driven to evil habits
and companions by some fancied or real hin
drance or disadvantage not treated wisely at
first. Even born idiots, under skillful treat
ment, learn to know God, and so repay toil
for their good; and maniacs are sometimes
restored to reason, while many might have
been kept from madness by wise care. If one
feels that he has the mark of Cain upon him,
he will, like Cain, be apt to feel that his pun
ishment is greater than he can bear, and flee
to a distant place; though it is to be observed
that even Cain’s mark was set upon him in
mercy by God.— Tlev. IT/.*. //. Jurist, in

The Hotel ck Bainbridge, near the corner
of Ninth and Delaware streets, which has
long been known as the resort of several frail
ladies, was yesterday the scene of a lively
row, which resulted in the arrest of the wo
men who participated. A man named Un

ing, which are “let ont” to men for a longer
or shorter period ; and it seems that a girl
named Kate owed Mrs. Underwood a dollar
for one of the rooms, the “gentleman” hav
ing failed to pay for it. A pair of bracelets,
however, belonging to the girl, had come
into Mrs. U.’s possession, and when Mrs.
Pettitt, a traveling actress who had a room
in the honse, demanded the bracelets for
her friend Kate, a row’ ensued between the j __
women, Mrs. P.’s husband arriving on the
scene in time to deal a blow or two at Mrs.
Underwood, who was the larger woman. The
police were calied in, and the two females
marched to the calaboose, where they both (
gave bonds for their appearance. Afterwards. ; TIIRU INSTITUTION
