MALIGNANCY OF YELLOW FEVER IN MEMPHIS. j
lrora the Memphis Appeal. Stpt. ‘ill.
It is fi remarkable fact that the medical
faculty of Memphis are by no means a unit r.s
to the'nature ot tho disease now prevailing iu
; the city. That ii is yellow fever is asserted
bvsome, but that it is nothing more than a
• virulent type of the common malarial levtrof
1 the Mississippi bottoms is tho opinion ot
i more than one oi the best physicians wo
Lave. The fact that it is contagious, or com
municated by contact with tho infected
persons, prove nothing, since science has
most fully demonstrated that nearly
every form of disease is more or less of
a contagious nature. If not yellow fever,
then, aud if a malignant type of malarial fe
ver, why should it be present here in Mein-
| phis at this time? Tho lcadiog physicians of
j New Orleans announced within the last two
! or three days that there was not a single case
j of yellow lever iu the Crescent City, the hith-
i erto supposed hot-bed c>f that feur-inspiring
malady, and that tho city was ns healthy as it
lias ever been at this season of the year. Wo
hear of no yellow lever iu Galveston, of none
in Charleston, South Carolina, of none even
in Havana, one of the original introducers of
the pestilence in the American continent. Is
it not a little strange that, in view of the fear-

short report of the j ful ravages of the so-called
mysterious disappearance of a well-to-do and fei” in Shreveport, Louisiana, aud of the
highly respected fanner named M*c Wood, highly inflamed condition of the public mind
from his house at Mulberry grove, a few
.nileB southwest of Ridge Farm, in Edgar
county. A gentleman li\ing in the vicinity,
.nd a friend of the murdered man, called at
the Times office on Tuesday, from whom we
gathered tbe following particulars:
In the afternoon of Sunday, tho 7th of Sep
tember, Mr. Wood, ia company with his wife,
went to pick some plums at a point not far
from their residence. Mulberry grove is com-
pysed of scattered clumps of black-jacks
s.nd plum thickets, with narrow vistas of
prkirle running between. It was here, under
a plum tree, the wife left her husband and re
turned home, he (this her tale) saying be
would go over to a distant field to see about
liis cattle, he being a cattle-grower on a large
-cale. The wife went home, (still her story>,
lid the chores and went to bed. The morn
ing dawned, but still the husband was ab-
outside ot Memphis, touching the fatality of
that disease in this city, New’ Orleans aud tho
cities of the Mexican Gulf - the natural con
tinental gates of ingress of this tropical pes
tilence-should be lree from tho presence of
the destroyer? It is accepted, too. we believe,
among the medical profession, as a therorem-
ic truth, or postulate, that the negro is not
liable to bo attacked by yellow lever—his
tropical blood being, it is as-umed, fortified
against a m ilady indigenous to the tiopics.
The prevailing fever has not respected this
light ot the colored man, which the fifteenth
amendment to the Constitution of the United
States fails to cover or protect, and our daily
mortuary report shows that black men die of
the disease as well as white. Eminent phy
sicians of this city tell of cases in their prac
tice in the Mississippi bottom, characterized
by all the symptoms and effects of the present

The search was at last given np. Tbe off-r

stimulated many to continue in the almost
hopeless undertaking, and it would have been
abandoned entirely, but for tbe instincts of a

Tho little creature was the companion of a

porcine and canine scavengers, to cleanse
them of their superflous foulness; and were it
not for tho rains of pitying heaven, would of
their selves give abundant employment to our

naan made himself known to the Times re-1

stated that a gentleman named Wood had |
disappeared from Mulberry grove, and it was
believed he had been murdered. He also
stated that there bad been an old feud be
tween Wood and his brothers-in-law, Williams
and Davidson, and suspicion fell upon them.
From the descriptions given of Henlon, this
was the man, who songLt thus to throw sus
picions upon other parties and elude pursuit.
His actions were wild and excited, and were
considered at the time as bnt natural to a
seemingly unsophisticated fellow, then
brought for tbe first time in contact with a
great crime. The notes taken were unfortu
nately lost, and the brief report given is from
memory.
This Henlon was slid at the time to have
been on too intimate terms with Mrs. Wood,
and for his suspicions conduct was discharged
from labor by Mr. Wood, in whose service he
had be^n for tome time. He had, iu fact,
fallen desperately in love, and was dying to
gratify it The husband, unfortunately, stood

working out of a mental problem that he
should seek fo remove the obstacle to his de

by the now snpposed help of Wood’s family

his purposes.

1 | WOULD RESPECTFULLY INFORM MY FRIENDS
and the public that I have entered tho COAL
TRADE, and have ojiened an office jmd yard ou the
corner of Grubb and Broad streets, near Peachtree.
I have no hesitation in saying that I have a BETTER
GRATE COAL THAN THE COAL CREEK. It burns
just as we’l, has less sulphur iu It, and docs not coke
as bad as C-*al Creek, and only makes hall the qnautity
of ashes, and is perfectly clear of slate.
By strict attention to business, aud furnishing tho
VERY BEST OF GRATE COAL, 1 hope to m rit a llbo
