Arrestson® Charge of KMwkp

0 Friday last ( '*™ T X° Kennc,l - V was
lin) „ K ht U'forc Justices Shuptrine and
f; r ,.cno on a charge of kidnapping a n<!gro
the property of Thos. G. Andrews,
FThe evidence was sufficient to justi
fv the Justices in sending Kennedy to jail
in default of hail, to answer before the Su
perior Court. On Saturday last, Charity
Reed, a widow woman, uas hi ought lie- .
fore Messrs. Shuptrine and Greene, as a
principal in kidnapping and harboring the
same negro. She gave bail. Mrs. ft., is ;
said to be severity-four years of aye, and
she now has four sons in the Georgia Pen
itentiary. “ The way of the transgressor
is hard.”
Mr. Andrews lias not as yet obtained
possession of his slave.
“Printers, don’t Read This!”
The publisher of the Pilot, would re- \
turn his sincere thanks to A. J. White,
Esq., of The Hock, in this County, for a
couple of as fine Hams as wo ever saw. —
Mr. White informs us that he lias a large
supply of the same quality for sale. “ But
w liv should not Printers read this ?” en
quires some friend. Because, we do not
wish our brother chips to envy us, and a
printer with a six pence in his pocket and
a couple of such fine Hams in his house is
to he envied by the craft.
OUR NEW-YORK CORRESPONDENCE
Dr. Cheever, beaded by Greely, is lectu-!
ring or repeating his u nigger slang” to j
large houses (at tlie Cooper Institute,) of
dear, grunting, wailing, sympathy hunters,
to whom charity at a great “ distance lends
enchantment to the view !” Asa reward
for his insanity on this subject, the Re
publican Legislature has made him one of
the Regents of the N. Y. University.
The “Sickles trial” and public scandal ;
consequent to it, have the monopoly here
just now, and a tremendous sympathy is
manufactured by libertines and a large
class of other people on both sides of the
subject; the whole of which is a great mis
fortune to all concerned, and a great scan
dal to the community. If all the fashionable
world, even at Washington or New-York,
who are guilty of the lieinousness of Key’s
crime, were exposed and brought upon the
stand with the collateral testimony, the
criminal dockets of this country would not
be purged in the next twenty years.—
“ Wickedness in high places” is rampant;
in low ones abundant.
Governor Morgan of this State has shown
great firmness and put to shame his pre
decessors, by refusing to pardon a notori
ous woman for poisoning her husband.—
He very properly says that a court and
twelve jurymen, with an impartial trial, is
the proper tribunal for such cases, in this
country, and not petitioners, sympathisers,
and opposers to the death penalty; and
with thousands of such interceeding with
him, lie says (i thc Law must be executed
to which I say amen ! In New-York, out
of GI murders one man was hung. In Bal
timore a truer discipline prevails ; four men
there, for shooting Policemen were all hung
in four months! and justly too.
“/Snobs. “ —This class of fast, nice young
gentlemen here, who go blind at about thir
teen years of age, and who, like a lesser
animal, ought to have been blind in the
beginning ; can’t get about without hav
ing a pair of “glasses” drawn across their
nose, through or over which, by bobing
their heads like a young duck, they are oc
casionally able to see some thing! Blit “0,
my, ’ as a young lady said in my bearing a
few days since, “all well bred fashionable
young gentlemen now wear them, especial
ly at parties, they look so dignified !” Here
her hoop got out from under her foot and
extended itself so majestically, in gradual
expanding gyrations, that I retired.
It is the impression of careful, intelli
gent business men, that there has been too
much trade this spring, and that as a con
sequence preparations for the fall trade will
be extensive, and in case of bad crops or
epidemics, another “crash ’ or extension
will be necessary within twelve months,
which is not at all improbable. A ery large
shipments of specie are going and must go
for two months to come to Europe, to pay
foi importations which have been largely
increased.
It was currently reported here in politi
cal circles before Air. Clingman of N. C.
Jest for Europe, that he had abandoned
Mi. Buchanan, and was favoring Mr. Doug
las, in his leading measures.
she Clay Festival Association held their
anniversary this year, with a large attend
ance and unusual enthusiasm. The speech
es, songs, eatables and drinkables, all flow
ed out and poured in, to their great jov.
. f crest and Willis have had anotliersuit,
in which the former obtained a judgment.
An uv French Theater has just opened
en Broadway, under favorable auspices.—
have the American, French, Dutch,
Kish and African races, all presented l>v
proxy to the public.
Col. Memenger, of Charleston, takes two
leathers from our Public Schools here, and
one from Boston, to take charge of a large
school to open in Charleston, the present
month, all of whom rank very high.
Yours &c.

Another Homicide. —On last night two
young men, on their return home from the

Gann proved too powerful for bis antago

Gann was arrested to-day about 11
