A Union Gospel
~ Mission For
Fitzgerald.
Sta.tement By One
QOf The Pastors
The idea of a Union Gospel Mis
sion for a place the size of Fitz
gerald is not a new idea although
many of us may not have been
very wide awake to the subject.
There are many men and boys
upon the streets in our city who
seldom if ever go to church. Some
of them feel that the church bas
nointerest in them, simp'y because
they do not know that she has.
They believe in true religion, when
you get heneath the survice; they
know nothing else has satisfied
them; and the right kind of an
effort will win numbers of them
to Christ and a better life,
Why cannot the churches of the
citv take up such a work together?
It is done in other places and here
is a field. Further. it will be done
by someone, perhaps at more ex
pense and not so well. A Salva
tion Army Station, or an independ
ent Mission would cost more,
would reach no more souls, and
would he‘lp the churches less.
During our special meetings a
month ago, we were led to open
such a work for a few days, Mr.
William Paulk kindly allowed us
to use his vacantstore room at 217
E. Pine street, until it should be
rented. The first service saw six
men raise their hands for prayer
and one to profess salvation, The
services have been cor.tinued every
Saturday night and Sunday after
noon since, Not every meeting
has been the same. This is not to
be expected. But two Sunday af
ternoon services have seen four
earnest souls seeking a better life
at each, and five have professed
conversion. Is.’t this work worth
while ?
I expect to leave the city and
cannot keep up my part 1o It. But
it ought not to be a one-man or a
one-church work. With a com
mittee of from three to five from
each church to take the work un
der control it could be providedfor
permanently. Volunteer workers
from different churches could take
different services; more services
could be held; more souls reached;
and all the churches would be
helped.
My desire is to arrange for the
meeting of such a committee and
to lay the work before them. It 1s
of such a character as to commend
itself to every earnest Christian, I
would appreciate it if every inter
ested person would communicate
with me by phone orin person be
fore Sunaay. ‘
