It may be well doubted whether the President in send

To the Stcckholdt rs of the Ma, nf He,item Railroad:

L'uv.uj fig new Curs Engine*. 4c. #io,oaioo
t'...’ experience oi the past winter convinced the Directors that our
L ruiiaudize Curs and Motive power. were insufficient for the business,
and on tiie 4th of May Inst, she Board authorized the President, to con
irart liirtwo Engines, and to build in the Company's Work-Shops, twen
ty-five additional Merchandise Cars.
One Engine has been procuieil and twenty-five Merchandise Cars
constructed and put on tlie Road, and some additional machinery has
bee i purchased to complete the flxures at tiie Machine Shop, and it is
believed the Koad is at this time as well stocked with Engines, Cars
and Machinery, all of the best and newest construction, as n.,y Road in
the United States. We would here remark that rv -ry Engine and Car
is in good running ord. r.
Since the last unnu and Report, ten Station Houses have been built,
one on each ten miles of Road, for the use of the different parties em
ployed in the repair of the Road, and a parly of men with an Engine,
tins been kept constantly u i the Road completing Ihe loud-bed, and
making such improvements as the interest of the Company demanded.
The charges for tlie above have been made to their proper accounts,
and not included in the repairs of Road aud maintenance of way. The
object lias been to complete the /load, and clone the •• construction ac
count’ and this is done so that in future the only account of tlie Com
pany will be its income account.
Yt the time the Inst annual Report was made, tlie Road had just
been opened, and in an expeit hiure of some #600,000 in less than
Iu: Ire mouths; it was impossible that all the bills eould be collected and
pud. These Bills, estimated in the Report of January last at $12,-
oIS 61, have been settled during ihe past year, and passed to the
proper accounts, and it is believed that nt this time, every Bill for
the re-construction of the Road as well as the expenses of the past
year is liquidated to the date of this Report: Keen the labor Roll for
December, has been paid in order to bring the accounts up to January
Ist, 1848.
The recent approprialion by the State, to complete the State Road,
from Cross l’tairis to the. ’Tennessee River, will exercise an important
iHumire on tlie business of the Macon & Western Raii Ko.ul, id
‘•ads at.wits value. If the expectations ot the State shoo'd
b” lvitlized, the completion of i. iii.i a! . i it is propor is.. . oe
. o.iiphshed in one year from tins date, should add s7s,oUu per an
num so the receipts of Ihe Macon & Western Rail-Road.
When we take into vi vv the vast Agricultural and Mineral products
of Tennessee, which must seek Savannah and Charleston through the
Macon & Western, and Georgia Roads, it is reasonable toexpect, that
these two Ronds will be largely benefitted by the completion of the
State Road.
The line of Steamboats from New-York to the City of Savannah, to
be in operation by the Ist September next, will exercise an important in
fluence on tiie business of the Macon & Western Rail-Road, as it will
open a speedy communication, for both freight and passengers, to and
from Tennessee, and enable us to divide this important business at least,
with the Georgia Rail-Road, which has heretofore monopolized the
entire travel and light freight.
The recent Acts of the Legislature in granting new Charters, it is
believed will not be injurious to the interest of’ the Macon & Wes era
Road. Tile Branch from Columbus to Baruesville, there is now
good reason to believe will be constructed, which will benefit the Ma
con &. Western Road, and when just and equitable arrangements to
accommodate this large business shall be made.it is believed Ihe inter
ests of the two Companies, will keep them closely and harmoniously
united. The South-Western Road, will also probably be constructed,
and it is believed its influence on the Macon &, Western Road, will be
highly beneficial.
The recent alteration of the Charter, gives the right to the. Macon &
Western Road, to construct a Branch troin Griilin to \Vest Point. —A
right that this Company will probably never exercise, unless driven to
do so i:i selt^iefence —an event hardly possible.
It may be a subject ot’ congratulation to tlie Company, that during
tile last Fall when the business of every other Rond in Georgia lias
been sensibly decreased tile receipts of the Macon &. Western have
been steadily incren.-i ig a id the prospects for a large winter and spring
business are flattering ns the cotton receipts at this date, are 5465 Bales,
less than those of lust year although tlie Crop of the present year is
larger than that of the lust year.
By reference to the cost of working the Road, which is accurately
ind minutely detailed it will be seen that our expenses are considera
bly lower than any other Road in toe United Stales. The Road is for
tunately situated, in having no Bridge or Mechanical work to keep up
and it is believed that with proper economy, tlie expenses of the Road,
will always he kept at a low point.
During the past year, our trains have run with great regularity, and
without the smallest accident, or the least injury to persons or property.
The credit of this, is due to the experience and care of the Superin
tendant.
The dividend for January in consequence of increase of Motive pow
er and Cars will be less than many of the Stockholders may have an
ticipatr.l hut the nelt profits of the past year, which is the first year
if the Roads operation, prove that the investment is well made, u:id
ii il it wiil give satisfactory returns to its Stockholders.
Ihj Order of the Hoard of Directors,
DANIEL TYLER, President.
