PROPOSALS,
For publishing at .I’MEXS.inthe State ofOeor.
gia, a n<“» weeblg finfirr. 10 fie entitled the
ATHENEUM.
N a comniuuit) ot Freemen, and where a dis
position to patronise Literature and Science
Is extensively manifested, the importance of a
well conducted newspaper, must, of necessity,
be generally understood; and among a reading'
people, such a paper can hardly fail of being ac-
cepttthlo, That the Athencum will be a paper
of his description, it might pet haps be deemed
presumptuous to assert: hut so far as the effoits
of the editor can render it useful—so far as pei*
severing industry and attention can insure sue-
cess to his undertaking—so far, at least, the sub
scriber c an pledge himself, that he will endeavor
to’crvl< r his paper worthy the attention of its
supporters.
The growing importance of Athens, where
the Hounsing University ofthe State is located,
and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and
" ealthy neighborhood, haa induced a belief that
no place in the upper country presented a more
inviting opening for the establishing a new
w eekly paper—and the influence of this opin
ion has led to the present proposals, and the
subscriber flatters h mself, that, in the liberal
patronage of an enlightened community, his un-
dertsckiiig will receive an approving sanction.—
And w iiile hh own exertions will be persever-
ingly employed to furnish a paper which shall
be useful to his suppo ters, he will venture to
hope that his columns may be diversified by the
occasional communications of such scientific ami
literary friends aa may be disposed, through
this medium, to aid him, and benefit the com
munity,
o make hia paptr useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal atm; and in the furtherance of
this object, he w ill endeavor to give the earliest
foreign and domestic intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits will
allow— together with such original or selected
political communications, or moral essays, as
have the public good in view, and are free fnVn
personal ties, but t » articles intended merely to
g’atify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or
continue personal contests, no place will be giv
en. And though in judging of these the editor
may occasionally err, it is to be hoped that no
improper /uotrvtt may be supposed to influence
his decision, inasmuch as the right of rejecting,
as well as of inserting communications, must be
reserved to himself.
As an editor, it will be his interest—as it will
he, under all circumstances, his inclination—to
give general satisfaction. From the line of im
partial duty, he will endeavor not to depart; and
none shall have cause to accuse him of volunta
rily giving a needless offence to a single indi
vidual.
it will scarcely be necessary to say, that the
inlitical complexion of the Atheneum will be
llepuhlican. In this age of light and knowlege,
in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patronage.
CONDITIONS
The Atheneum will be published once a week
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at 1 liree Dollars a
year, pay able in advance, or Four Dollars, if pay.
ment is deferred to the end ofthe year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
andtiR a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
llT* Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify tlu same by the
first of September, as it is contemplated to issue
(he first number early in that month.
