Gould. Guilty of Larceny,
New York, Dee. 13—A cancelled
check for ,1,500,000 payable to the or.
der of William H. Vanderbilt, was ex
hibited In Judge Rosalsky’s courtroom
yesterday when Assistant District At-
tomey Train called Peter Forrester to
the bar. The check bore the signs-
ture of the defendant.
Years ago Forrester had been one
of the most prominent speculators In
Wall street He did business with
the Vanderbilts and the Goulds. He
was a member of the Stock Exchange
stood high In the councils of the Ma
sonic fraternity, but today his fortune
Is wiped out
This broken down, gray-halred old
man answered a charge of grand lar

Last June Winona Edwards killed
her father, a farmer residing near
Oak Hill, Ills., by shooting him
through the head and then beating his
brains out. The crime created In
tense excitement, but before the cor-
oner’s jury the girl produced proof
that her father had tried to assault
her and that In Bolf defense she had
killed him. Edwards Is 33 years old.

fight on Jackson street today, partici
pated In by four negro women, Stel
1 y Williams shot Ellen Black dead.
Three women attacked the Williams
woman, one slicing her with a razor.
The tragedy caused the greatest ex
citement among the negroes In the
city.

Boston, Dec. 14—Forty three refu
gees, brought here today bu the
Cunard steamer from Liverpool.
Among them were men, women and
children who escaped from Riga Vll-
na, Kieff, Odessa and Kovno. They
described scenes of slaughter at Odes
sa In which Cossacks and police led
rabble against Jews and Christians.
Fury of the mob was not directed
wholly against the Jews. Refugees
say that victims numbered ten thous
and In one week, following November
first.
