Eating Pork Meat Kills Several 'RESIDENCE BURNS
People in Tattnall County.
Savannah. Fob. - 27—The authori
ties at the Savannah hospital have
been tery much interested in the
case of Rufus Woods of Collins, Tatt
nall county, who is now recovering
from traccina poisoning at that in
stitution.
Mr. Wood's case is a very peculiar
one. He and his wife are recover
ing, but Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cowart,
of Collins, Mrs Wood’s mother and
father, and three of her sisters, Mis
ses Susie, Essie and Vela, have all
died. It is believed they were pois
oned from eating diseased pork. The
famliy killed a pig that seemed a lit
tle sick and ate a good deal of the
meat. Some of the refuse was
thrown to the chickens and the
chickens ate it heartily... Later the
chickens were eaten by the family.
This was during the Christmas hoi- j
days The pork lasted sometime,
Miss Susie died January 25th; Mrs.
Cowart, February 4th, then Mr Cow-
aft on February 1^1 th. Miss Essie
died on February 15th and Miss Vela
on the 18th of February. Mr. Woods
condition became such on a week ago
that he came here for treatment
He and his wife are on the retd
to recovery. Savannah physicians
are making an effort to secure some
of the meat or some of the chickens
to see If they can find any trace of
the poison In it

The Celebrtion of St. Patrick’s
Day in City of Savannah.
Savannah, Feb. 27—The Irishmen
of Savannah have already begun
perparations for the observance of
8t. Patrick’s, day which comes on
the 17th of March, This year the
anniversary will fall on Saturday, but
■ that will not interfere with the cer
emonies. There will be a parade in
the morning of all the Irish Socie
ties and in the evening there will be
a banquet at the DeSoto hotel by the
Hibernian society and also a ban
quet by the four divisions of the An
cient Order of Hibernians.
This banquet is the brightest spot
In the whole forty days of lent In
8avannah. On St. Patrick’s day
there is much feasting and frolicing
after a visit to St Patrick's church
where a panygeric to the good Saint
is delivered by some of the Catholic
clergy of the city.
Another great day with the Irish
is the birthday of Robert Emmett.
This will be celebrated with a meet
ing of the Ancient Order of Hiber
nians and the Irlsh-Amerlcan Friend
ly society on next Monday night.
Hot Politics in Chatham.
Savannah, Feb.^ 27—The United
Democratic Club held their second
general rally of the municipal cam
paign last night at the gymnasium of
the Y. M. C. A. It was a very rep-
sentative meeting and the enthusi
asm was marked. It served to em
phasize the fact that the campaign
is to be one of some warmth. By
the time the dog wood blossoms it
•.vlll be hotter than ever
There was a new speaker intro
duced at the meeting last night in
the person of Mr. H. E. Wilson, a
lawyer, and ex-recorper. Mr. Wil
son made a characteristic speech in
which he said some pretty plain
things about , the present “ins.” The
Citizens Club at its last rally adopt
ed a platform endorsing the closing
of saloons on Sunday and the stop
ping of policy playing. This the
speakers of last night declared to
be a subterfuge to catch votes. They
said that the administration yvut j/iy
sincere, despite the fact th$yrttf#‘
mayor has issued orders to keep
lid on !n Savannah and keep
tight
The campaign has already
oped some personalities and

|t was the Third Alarm That had
Been Turned in From That Section
of the City in Eighteen Hours—The
House in' Ruins, But Much Furni
ture was Saved.
(From Tuesday’s Daily.)
The residence of Mr. T. M. Ray
on Wells street was practically de
stroyed by fire this afternoon at one
o’clock. The fire was discovered on
the roof of the structure by Mr.
F. Neely, who was on his way back
to the South Georgia Buggy Fac
tory, after having been to his din
ner He immediately gave the alarm
notifying the family and having an
alarm sent in from the box On the
corner of Floyd and Wells street.
The residence burned like tinder.
Rushin Ray had just left .the house
and was not a block away When the
alarm was sounded He turned and
saw the roof in flames and the fire,
driven by a strong wind, was burn
ing fiercely. Mr. Frank Roberts and
others living in that section stated
that they had hardly ever seen a
fire burn so rapidly.
The fire department reached the
scene promptly and attached two
lines of hose and fi>ught the flames
on both sides of the house The
roof was entirely burned ofT, but the
walls of the structure were saved*,
though in a badly scorched condi
tion. The work of the firemen is
said to have been excellent, the fire
