(Prom Wednesday's Daily)
A special term of linker county
Superior Court will bo held in New

tho young man who is charged with
the murdor of Ernest E. llurksdaie,
s prominent young bustnoss man or
Tampa, Fla.
Tho alleged crime was committed
soveral weeks ago on a farm or
which Hudgins wns in charge. Tin.

bottom of an abandonod well after
ho had been missing for a w< ck.

of his head, where the full charge
from a shot gun had torn its way
through tho skull and tho hands and
feet wero tied. Tho body was wrap
ped in a blood-stained bed quilt.
There probably will be many ex
citing features to the trial next week
judging from what is known of tho
enso, the result of tho various pre
liminary Investigations that have
been madrf. Joseph Leary, step
father of Hudgins, who wns arrest

Newton ns an accomplice of Hud
gins, and whether ho 1b tried will de
pend upon the result of the trial or
the whlto man.
Tho state is expected to attempt
to prove that the killing of Rarks-
dalo' was inspired by threats of the
Tampa merchant to prosecute Hud
gins for the nlloged misappropria
tion of funds whllo Hudgins wns in
Rarksdnlo’s employ In Tamapa; that
Barksdale followed Hudgins to Geor-
gia in tho hope thnt he would be
able to recover the money which he
alleged had been stolen; that a set
tlement was promised, but was de
ferred from time to time, untn
Barksdale was killed as the easiest
way to dispose of the matter. Hud
gins, It Is stated, has admitted that
he killed Barksdale, but claims that
the tragedy wns the result of an ac
cident while the two men were
•possum hunting together.
Judge Frank Park will preside
during the trial, which is expected
to be one of the most sensational
In the history of Baker County.
RAN OVER MAN
Mr.Steve Chitty was Knocked
From hi# Bicycle and Seri'
ously Hurt Yesterday.
(From Wednesday's Daily)
What cam© very near being »
ious accident accurred yesterday at
tho intersection of Patterson street
and Centeral avoruuo when an uuto-
moblle, “which is said to have boon
driven by Mr. Gornto’s daughter, ran
Into Mr. Stevo Chitty, who was rid
ing a bicycle, knocking him olT ot
his wheel and runuing over him
and tho whool both.
Thoso who saw the accident were
horrified by it, as they expected that
ho would be crushed to death.
us knocked senseless, his left
leg bruised and a long gash cut on
tho back of his head from his fall
upon the pavement. Mr. Walter
Peeples was the llrst to reach him
and assisted him into Dlmmock's
Drug Storo where Dr. Grltlin attend
ed to his injuries and ho was later
moved to his residence on North
Ashley street.
An examination showed that while
he was badly shocked, his injuries
cere not as serious as they were
thought to be. Only about three
stitches were necessary to sow up
the wound on his head. Ho com
plained at first of his back being
hurt but that was moro of a wrench
than anything else.
Thoso who saw the accident say
that it wns purely nn accident all
around and that nobody was 10
blame for It. Tho nutomoblle was
not running at a very fast speed.
Mr. Chitty stated that ho saw
another automobile and was trying
to get out of the way of that one
when he ran Into the ono th*%
caused his injuries.
The occupants of tho automobile
wero turning from Patterson street
going towards the North to the High
School building, and Mr. Chitty

Tho road gang has been moved
to the mllo branch of Ashley street
and they are going to begin at once
building a turnpike to the branch
from both sides and are going
put In a handsome brick viaduct
over tho main stream, so that *thc
place will bo passable in all kinds
of weather.
Heretofore, In bad weather it has
been one of tho worst places In the
country, though ono that Is crossed
as ninny times daily as any other
place that wo know of. It is
derstood that tho county commis
sioners have not fully decided
whether they will put big pipe
drains, or brick viaduct, though It
understood thnt they are favorable
to tho viaduct.
Chairman Clark, of the street
committee, wns called Into consulta
tion with Chairman Hagan on yes
terday and they went to the mile
branch together to agree upon the
work. Chairman Clark authorized
tho county gnng to cut down tho
hill on Ashley street this side of the
brnnch and use the dirt for filling
In the turnpike. So the improve
ments at the branch will mean a
much better road thia side of there.
As soon aa this work la complete*
it would be a mighty good Idea for
tho commissioners to move the road
gang down the branch about threo
hundred yards to Patterson street
and do some work from there on
towards Pine Park. That road
largely traveled and tho county
commissioners ought to keep it uo.
The road is said to bo in bad con
dition now.

large nmount of granite has
been placed on Patterson street to
be used In putting in the drainage
valleys on each side of the street.
This stono Is to bo placed in the
drains and will'bo cemented, s> us
to make it stand for a long time.
From the cement drains to the car
line is going to be paved with Augus
ta gravel, and the street is to be
graded and leveled. This will neces
sitate the lowering of the car lino
at many places. I
The work to be done is going to
be put In with a view to making it,
last for years, so If there is to b© (
any excavating for water mains or
sewerage connections, it ought to be
done it once. While this work is.
going on would be a good time for
put in splendid shape as soon as
possible. The work is to be done
gradually but surely, the idea being
to do as much permanent work each
year as possible.
New Jail Badly Needed.
Every grand Jury that has met in
Lowndes county during the past
few years hag called attention to
tho fact that Lowndes county
sorely In need of a modern jail. Most
of the grand juries have recommend
ed selling the present jail lot and
buying property further away from
the business section of th 0 town,
where It can bo gotten for less
money. Enough money could bo
gotten for the present Jail lot and to
almost erect a new building. Tho
present jail Is not only Inadequate,
but It is pot a fit place In which to
confine any human being
It Is to be hoped thnt the new
board of county commi^|rper8 win
get busy right fway ai^tnrovidp a
new Jail for the county. They win
probably find It better to sell the
present building and erect one some
where else.
