Negro who Killed two White
Men in Florida is in Prison
in Valdosta.

murderer for whose arrest a reward
of $500 is outstanding.

or Saturday by Chief of Police
Dampler. He was driving a wagon

and he was located by accident,
though Chief Dampler hae received
a number of letters In regard to him
from Sheriff C. G. Allen, of Chtpley,
tfla.
Last Friday Chief Dampler sent a
“spotter" to Rays Mill to see if he
could not locate a negro who was
accused of reckless shooting in this
city and who, it was hoped, could
be landed in time for the grand Jury
to consider him after Recorder Var-
medoe finished with him. This negro
could not be found, but the chiet'B
. “spotter" told him that he saw a ne
gro there who was a fugitive from
Florida. The “spotter" knew his
name as well as his alias 1 .

ephoned Sheriff Avera, of Berrien,
And aaked him if he would not catch

at Rays Mill.
Yesterday morning the Berrien
sheriff dropped off «t Rays Mill,
found Wlllmont driving a wagon and
took him In charge. Arriving here
the sheriff was told who the nogro
iwag and what he. was wanted for.
SOLD THE FLORENCE HOTEL.
Old Structure to Be Torn Down to
Flake Room for New Hotel.
The old Florence Hotel waa sold
yesterday to Mr. J. Q. Dorris,
rsther ths lumber la the old build
ing was sold to him. This does not
include the brick nor the west end
of the hotel. Ten rooms of the build
lug will be moved ttown Savannah
avenue and converted Into a lodging
bouse to be used until the new hotel
Is completed. \
It Is understood that Mr. Dorris
bought the material dn the balance
of the building to be used by him fa
building a number of cottages for
renting. It Is understood that the
amount paid for the building was
four hundred dollars and he has
agreed to move It away from them
at once.
It Is also understood that a con
tract for the new hotel will be let
next Saturday. A number of con
tractors have been looking at the
preliminary plans and preparing to
make their bids. Mr. Curran Ellis,
the architect from Macon will re!
turn to Valdosta next Friday or Sat
urday, and the contract for the new
building will probably be let that
day.
The tearing away pf the old
Florence hotel will remove one or
the moet historic of Valdostas old
land marks and the erection of the
new hotel In Its place will do more
to Improve the appearance of the
city then anything that has been
done here. The new hotel will be
a tremendous booster for the cltv
and It will not be long before It will
be found that the lncreaelng hotel
facilities of the Otty will draw
enough people to fill them to their
full, capacity.

Atlanta, Ga., May 16.—Practical

which the state supreme court now
has under advisement in the case of
J. L. Strickland vs the state, from
Carroll county.
It Involves the constitutionality
of the law which was framed by
Representative Whit of Screven,
and which took away from Georgia'
citizens the right to carry a pistol,
even strapped openly on the hl'p
without first obtaining a license
to do so from the county ordinary.
The law requires registration of
weapons, and responsibility of char
acter on the pert of the bearer.
Soma of the wisest jurists In
Georgia have expressed the opinion
that though the law may be a salu
tary one In Its operations. It Is prob
ably a violation of both the state
constitution and of tho United States
constitution as well, which provides
that the right of the people to bear
arms shall pot be abridged.

and Goodwin fired at him, the bullet
hitting the door. The negro shot him
down and continued nla flight. Good
win died a fow days later.
It is said that the slayer hae been
living In this section ever since then,
though the fact was not known until

Ousloy, Ga., May 16.—Mias Lucy
Wade, who ha* taught a very suc
cessful term of school at Ousley, will
leave Tuesday fbr a visit to relatives
in Boston and Thomasvllle, after

three times, one shot hitting a horse
behind Sephens, another wounding

Cargll claims that Stephens ‘has
been threatening hls life, lately.
There has been bad blood between
the men for a long time. Stephen
married Cargll's daughter several
years ago, but. they separated. Cargll
is 65 yean old.

AN AGED MINISTER DIES.
Judge Wilfred Lane Galled to Mas
sachusetts by Hls Father's Death.
Judge Wilfred ,.C. Lane received a
telegram Saturday morning notifying
him of the critical Illness of hls fath
er, Rev. J. W. Lane, of North Hadly,
Mass., the telegram stating that hls
condition was critical and asking
Judge Lane to come at once. He left
at night for the North to be at hls
father’s bedside during hls Illness.
Yesterday s telegram was receiv
ed that the venerable minister had
passed away, death following a short
attack of pneumonia.
On Friday Judge and. Mrs. Lane
received a copy of a North Hadley
paper containing a sketch of Rev.
Mr. Lane’s career «, a minister in
that place, after a service of thirty
six years In one pulpit. For eighteen
years before that he servd a church
in a city just across (Be river, a dis
tance pf two miles, making hls ca
reer fifty-six years in the ministry
at two churches almost in the same
town.
The deceased was 84 yean old,
and h&d been in active service all
of bis life. He resigned hls place
on account of hls old age only a
week or two ago, hls last service be
ing conducted at the church last Sun
day.

former vice-president of the United
States and for many years one of the
foremost bankers and financiers of
the metropolis, received congratula
tions from a host of friends today
on the occasion of hls eighty-seventh
birthday anniversary. Mr. Morton re
cently arrived home from abroad,
having spout the winter In the south
of France. He Is seemingly In good
health and continues to take an ac
