HITTING AT VALDOSTA
Efforts are Made to Dodge This City
in the Around-tlie-State-Tour,
According to a dispatch from Al
bany to the Atlanta Constitution
of Sunday It looks very much as if
the next tour around the State will
give this city and also Quitman the
grand go-by.
The tripip from Thomasvllie to
Savannah will cut out Quitman and
Waycross. It is said, because these
cities did not send delegates to the
recent convention at Montezuma
Ind’cating a lack of interest.
The Constitution quotes Judge
Hansell Merrill, of Thomasvtlle,
who la a member of the committee
as saying that the roads are im-

score of cases
Strange to say there were no cases,
ot drunk and disorderly, though
there were several fights. These
. appeared to be fisticuffs resulting
from disputes and were not due to
intoxications.
There were about nine dog own
ers before the Recorder to answer
to the charge of having a dog In
town without paying the license.
Some of the cases appeared to be
more aggravating than others and
some of the owners were fined more
than others. The fines for the dog
owners ranged from two to three
dollars, part of the fines going to
buy tags for the dogs that were
running without the license in the
town.
There were four or five bicyclers
who were riding on the side-walks,
nil of these being fined $2.00 for
want to see the cream of South
j Georgia their wishes will not be
granted unless they come by Quit-
man and Valdosta. It would also
be well for them to go by Way-
cross. as the road from here to Sa
vannah by that city Is about as
good as the road from Macon to Sa
vannah, especially since the work
which Is being done this year Is
nearly completed.
If, however, the commltee finds
that It Is Impracticable to go from
here via Waycross, they will find
a splendid road from here to Macon
thus putting them bnck Into the
Central City without much loss In
time or distance from Thomasvllie.
Valdosta would like to have the
"Around-the-State-Tour" to take In
this city, but Valdosta does not
want it had enough to have any ot
the first Offence and double that ber neighboring towna cut out.
She can get along without It,
though some of the would-be rivals
amount for the second. Curious to
relate, second offenders are hard
ly ever found.
Another case this morning was
against a young man named Haw
kins who was accused of "cussing
out" a Greek lunch counter man.
Hawkins plead guilty to using
rough language to the Greek and
-explained to the court Just how it
occurred. When Judge Varnedoe
Tieard his story he advised the de
fendant to withdraw his plea of
^guilty, as he thought the circum
stances were such as to justify
rough talk.
Hawkins claimed he and a friend
stopped at the lunch counter and
got two hamburg steak sandwiches
and when he went to pay for It the
Greek told him the price was $1.20
He says he cussed out the Greek,
"but paid the price. He thought it
was a "hold-up" and Judge Varne
doe was disposed to agree with
blm. If Hawkins sustains the
charge against the Greek It would
not be a bad idea to do something
with him.
Another defendant this morning
was young Louis Bondurant,
nice young man who was caught
exceeding the speed limit In an au
tomobile. He was fined $10. It be
ing his first offence.
A negro named Mack Johnson
Was fined $10. for beating h|® wife
4md other offenders were fined for
different offences.
Two or three cases of fighting
were put off until next Monday.
The fines amounted this morning
to $120.

Prospects are bright for the early

those who are actively In charge of
the enterprise say that dirt will be

The company will be one com

took about six months for the city

get together, but this was finally
done, and a liberal charter was

Has Eight and n Half Towns.
As an evidence of the prosper
ous condition of South Georgia la
the large number of small and
growing towns In the various
counties of this section, says a
Thomaaville dispatch.
Thomas county Is probably the
banner county In this respect as it
can boast of eight and a half In
corporated towns besides a number
of others that are In a flourishing
condition. Of the Incorporated
towns besides Thomasvllie, there
are Boston, Pavo, Coolldge, Mer-!
rlllville, Ochloeknee, Meigs, MOt-
ealfe and Barwiek. Barwick Is
half In Thomas and half In Brooks,
hut Thomas thinks It has the bet
ter half. It would he a surprise to
see the amount of prosperity in
these towns and their wide awake,
up-to-date condition. Most of them
t*nve water works and electric
lights and all have telephones. B
ton has two banks and Pavo, Cool
