At a time when ruuuuablubor schools and other
respectable institutions arc rising arouud us, it
is rcasouablc to expect, that some mode of com
munication, with regard to the success or failure
of auy attempts is very desirable. Teachers
need a periodical wherein they may express
their views, and from which they may learn the
views of others, and gather encouragement and
guidance iu the arduous task of instruction- It
is our-design, to collect information from every
source, aud make our paper au organ commu

Perhaps, at no period of our history, could
there be a greater call for correct views on

THE PLAGUE IN THE FOREST—A FA
BLE.
[nr JOHN qyi.VCT XD.1MS.J
Time was. when round the Liou’s «ica.
A peopled city raised iu head;
’Twas not inhabited by uieu,
But i'ourfootcd beasts instead.
The lyux, the leopard and the Lear,
The Tiger aud the wolf were there ;
The hoof defended steed ;
The bull, prepared wRb horns to gore—
The cat with claws, the tusky hoar
Aud all the cauiue breed.
Id social compact tinu combined.
Together dwelt tile boasts of prey;
Their uiutdurous weapons all resign’d,
Aud vow’d each other not to slay 1 .
Antuug them, Reynard thrust bis phiz ;
Nor hoof, nor bom, uor tusk, was his—
For warfare all uufit;
He whispered to tbo royal dunce,
And gained a settlement at once ;
His weapon was—his wit.
One summer, by some fatal spell,
(PhtEbus was peevish for some scoff,)
The plague upon that city feN,
Aud swept tlie beasts by thousands off
Thu lion as became bis pavr.
Loved his dear people irom liis heart,
Ann, tiikiug couuibl sage,
His peerage summon’<) to devise
Aud offer up a sacrifice,
To soothe Apollo’* rago. •
Quoth lion, “we are sinners all!
And eveu. it must be confess’d,
If among sheep i chance to fall—
I, I, am guilty as the rest.
To me the sight of lamb is curst,
It kindles m my throat a thirst J
I struggle to refrain-
Poor iuuoceut! his blood so swett 3
His flesh so delicate to eat!
I find resitauco vain.
Now to bo caudid, I must Own,
The sheep are weak, aud I am strungA,
But wheu we fiod our ourselves alohe,
Tbo sheep have never douo me wroug
Aud, sioce 1 purpose to reveal
All toy offences, uor conceal
Ouo trespass from your view ;
My appetite is made so k jen,
That with the sheep, Ihc tiihe has beefc,'
I took—the sbephehd too.
‘Then let n» * U our sins confess,
And iv. A ’"er the blackest guilt,
To case ...j .. p c’s deep distress,
Let his axouiug blood be spilt.
My owu confession now you hear—
Should uone of deeper dye appear,
Your sentence freely give:
And ifou hie should fall the lot.
Make me the victim on tho spot;
Aud let my people Jive-”
The council with applauses rung,
To hear the CoJrus.of the wood;
Though still soihe doubt suspended hung,
If he would make his promise good—
Quuih Reynard, “since the world w as made*
Was ever love like this displayed ?
Let us like subjects true.
Swear as before your feet we fall.
Sooner thau you should die for all
We all will die for you.
‘But, please your majesty, I deem,
Submissive to your royal grace,
You hold in far loo high esteem
That paltry, poltroon, sheepish race;
Fur oft reflecting iu tho shade,
I ask myself why sheep were made
By all-creatiug power? .
And how soe’er 1 tax my mind*
This, the sole reason 1 can find—
For lions td devour.
‘And as for eating now and then,
As well the shepherd as the sheep;
flow cau that braggart breed of atbh
Expect with you the peace to keep ?
’Tis time their blustering boast to' stem,
That all the world was made for them,
Aud prove creation’s plan ;
Teach them, by evidence profuse.
That mau was made for liou’s use*
Not lions made for man.”
Aud now noble peers begin;
Aud cheer’d w ith such example bright,
Disclosing each his secret sin,
Some midnight murder brought to light
Reynard was counsel for them all;
No crime the assembly could appal.
But he could botch with paiut:
I I ark ! as his honied acceuts roll.
Each tiger is a geutle soul;
Each blood-houad is a saint.
-When each bad told his tale in turn.
The long ear’d beast of bnrden came.
And meekly said—“mv bowels ye..rn
To make confession of my shame ;
But I remember on a time,
1 pass’d, not thiukiog of a crime,
A hay stack on my way;
ilis lure, some tempting devil spread—
1 stretched across the fence my head,
And cropp’d—a lock of hay.”
“Oh, monster! vidian !” Heynaid cied—
“No longer seek the victim, sire;
Nor why your subjects thus havd died,
To expiate Apollo’s ire.”
The couucil with one voice, decreed;
All join’d to execiate the deed—
“What! steal another’s grass f”
The blackest crime their lives could show,
Was washed as white as virgin snow ;
The victim was—tjii ass.
