NEW ORLEANS COTTON
(Bv Associated Press.)
NEW 'ORLEANS. March 3.—Cotton futures
opened steady at an advance Y>f 1 to 4 aroints
on good cables. Favorable weather conditions
ever the cotton region, however, restricted
buying, and-at the highest in the early trad
ing prices were 1 to 6 points up. toe new
crop months showing little disposition to do
better. Moderate short selling set in after the
call and more than met the demand, with th°
result that prices commenced to fall off. At
the end of ihe first naif hour of business
prices were unchanged, compared with the
closing level of Saturday.,
Bears held the. market down around the mid
dle of the morning but the sales were not suf
ficient to bring about a net decline. The
[weather forecast indicated little change fejuthe
[cotton belt and new crop reports were con
sidered very favorable. At the lowest of the
tur.rning the new crop months were d\ily 1 point
nmler Saturday’s close, while the old crop did
[not sink below the level of Saturday's close.
iQuiet but steady buying gave the market a
[fairly good tone. At otmon prices were 3 to 4
points over Saturday’s final quotations.

NEW ORLEANS, March 3.—The European
press Is again more hopeful as to a settlement
of the war iti the Balkans iu the near future.
Government securities show a good advance,
to <*4%; French rentes to 89.47. Apprehen
sion of graver complications in spring have
been generally entertained right along and
consequently particularfy strong efforts are
neing made to eliminate the Balkan trouble.
Liverpool came in slightly better than due
and shows spot sales of 8,000 bales at 8
points lower quotations. Liverpool stock of
American increased 3,368 bales; other kinds
decreased 15,532 bales.
Stock correction^, from Europe recently re
ported tlqit all show un Increase In Ameri
can and a decrease in other kinds, from
which it can be inferred that other kinds are
brdpg largely substituted for American cot
ton. The weather over Sunday was very fa
vorable: Dry, cold, high winds; no precipita
tion. Indications are for partly cloudy to fair;
no rain except possibly some precipitation In
northeast Oklahoma, northern Arkansas and
Tennessee. •
Our market is dull but steady this morning
around 12.20c for July. There is a some
what better feeling owing to better political
news from Europe and anticipation of an in
augural address assuring the trade and capi
tal by the new president.

The hens and pullets in the Na

Mountain Grove, Mo., more than
doubled the record made by hens in
the same month for the previous
year. The yield .for January one
year ago was 3,203 eggs, and the

two and a half months this yearv
was 12,970 eggs, or 1,567 eggs more
in two and a half months this
year than in three months of last .
year. We attribute this to the
fact that we have more pullets this
year and the winter has not been
so severe as last, and our pens .
most all appear to be of better
quality. They are consuming more
feed than last year.
A Canadian Black Orpington pullet in pen 59 laid **very day in Jan

4 Above quotations apply to corn-fed hogs, mast
and peanut fattened hogs, lc to l%c under.
Cattle receipts light. Market stronger on
all middle grades, with, a better supply of
feed steers, which continue to find a ready
demand at present quotations, which are con
sidered good In vlew r of the large number of
feeders shipping this class of beef cattle to
this as well as other markets at this time.
As usual, February and the early part of
March most the winter feelers put their cat
tle on the market and during this period a
sag in prices on the better grades of fed cat
tle is noticeable. There is a splendid de
mand for medium cattle in good flesh and es
pecially ihe better grades of heavy butcher
cow stuff with quality. ►
R. C. Walker, of McDonough, Ga., shipped
the best load of steers received this week,
averaging about 1.200 pounds, tbree-.Vear-olds.
Short Horn and fnt. The twenty-eight head
netted him more than $2,000, and were sold
to an Atlanta packing house. These steers
were good enough for any market and a credit
to the feeder.
Henry county feeders continue to hold the
first place In tbe matter of feeding and pro
ducing high-class beef for our local market.
Enough cattle are reported from scattering
sections to insure a fair run for the Incoming
week, and with the present active demand,
prices are expected to be raintained.
Hog receipts continue normal, quality ir
regular and market uneven for the reason of
the mixed kinds coming.
