PEOPLE WILL TALK.
We may go through this world, but ’t#Hl I

REPLY TO john’barleyc orn.
Mr. Editor: I will apeak for my
self and a few others, ~, re p ly j„
John Barleycorn's assertions. In the
first place, I have never seen nor heard
of a young man lying around a bar
feoni 111 this place. As for their be.
ing cursed,or abused, by word or deed,
it is utterly false. Secondly, tlieh- as
sociation, when known to use intoxi
cating “drinks, is obnoxious not onlv
to the young ladies, bm to the old
folks,-as he so empudently calls our
fathers and mothers. As to preferiug
a young man that drinks to a Good
Templer, I would say that we have
tolerated' the former byway of encour
agement to let the jloisOwous drought
alone and be somebody. I wonder if
this fellew, or any other,- expects a
young lady to go around to the bar
room and peep, and pursuade, and
beg a bloat, or a berrst, (I don’t know
the appellation he deserves) to dfr-jui
and abandon hts ca-uwe?
I admit that a young fadv, and her
parents too, arc often deceived by
young men. They falsely assume the
nameof gentlemen,and behave them
selves with propriety in Ihe presence
.of eldevly persons and ladies, when
they are bad at heart and wait until
darkness to cover their behavior. No
wonder they take the back door to the
bar-room. They hnVi/t the manliness
to be what they are; and then boast of
their cowardly deceivings. And then
say besides, be was never asked to
join the Good Templers—never nied
with by the old folks nor Indies.—
And you never will be. The Lodge
,s open every Saturday night tud you
know it. It is your pi-iviledge to go
and “sign away your rights,” us von
call it. Shame on you! a right to
drink whiskey, a right to disgrace
your sisters and brothers and parents,
a tight to do every disgraceM thing
a drunk man will do. If you are pos.
sessed rrf such rights, I would not
sign them away. No. no! I would
go and bang myself rather than sign
away such rights. 1 would not be
presumptive enough to take the tninie
of "the high born beauty,” as yon ■
name such ladies, ns try in this ;
bumble way to be high toned, and 1
honorable. I would advise all of my
sex to n main singl'e, or he sure you
are not deceived by men who takes
drink in the Lodge 01 out of it. And
! the Lord deliver us from a high bom
j hazy man. MAKI BA.
