THAT IS ALWAYfTHfi WAY.
“ I am certain he's handsome,
And galknt and gay,
From the history the; gave me,
Os his person to-day.
This night I must meet him,
And oh! what a dash
We will take —for they tell me,'
He supports a mustache. r
* And, Ma, list what I tell you,
Os him it is said,
By those who should be posted,
He*s anxious to wed.”
“ But are you sure, dearest May,
He’s worthy and kind,
Possessed of a heart and soul,
And noble of mind?
Without these, dearest daughter,
’Tis foolish and wild,
To think of him claiming
The haod of .my child.”
“And that’s always the way,
When there is a chance,
Os my making a conquest,
And pleasure enhance:
And to think that the suitor,
For.my»beart and hand,
Must be a saint or a dweller
Os some fairy land.
Tis preposterous and vain,
That parents should thus, I
Always be troubling themselves,
And meddling with us.”
A Devout Man.
A devout man is he that ever sees the in*
visible, and ever trembleth before that God
he sees; that walks even here on earth with
the God of Heaven, and still adores that
majesty with whom he converses; that con
fers hourly with the God of spirits in his
own language, yet so as no familiarity can
abate of his awe, nor fear abate aught of
his love; to whom the gates of Heaven are
ever open, that he may go in at pleasure at
the Throne of Grace, and none of the angelic
spirits ean challenge him of too mneh bold
ness ; whose eyes are well acquainted with
those heavenly guardians, the presence of
whom he doth at trnly acknowledge as if
they were sensible companions. He is well
known of the King of Glory for a daily suit
er in the court of Heaven, and none so
welcome there as he. He accounts all his
time lost that fall* beside his God, and can
no more be weary of good thoughts than of
happiness.
His bosom is no harbor for any known
evils and it is a question whether he abhors’
most sin or hell. His care is to entertain
God in a clean and free heart, and there
fore he thrusts the world out of doors, and
humbly beseeches God to welcome Him
self to hisAavn. • He is truly dejected and
vile in his own eyes. Each of his slips is
heinous; every trespass is aggravated to
rebellion. The glories and favors of God
heighten His humiliation. He hath look
ed down to the bottomless deep, and seen
with horror what he deserves to feel ever
lastingly. His cries have been strong as
his fears just; and he hath found mercy
more ready to rescue him than he could
be importunate. His hand could not be
scorn put forth as his Savieur’s for deliver
ance. The sense of bis mercy hath raised
him te an unspeakableioy; to a most fer
vent love of so dear aßedeemsr, that love
, bath knit bis heart to so meritorious a de
liverer, and wrought a most blessed Union
betwixt God and his soul That union
can no more be severed from an infinite de
light, than.that delight can be severed from
,an infinite delight, than that delight can
be severed from an humble and cheerful
acquiescence in his munificent God. And
uow, as in a heavenly freedom, he pours
out his soul into the bosom of the Almighty,
in all faithful suits for himself and others;
so he enjoys God in the blessings received,
and returns all zealous praises to the Giver.
He comes fervently to the oracles of God,
and brings not his eve, but his heart with
him ; not carelessly negligent in soeking to
know the revealed will of his Maker, nor
too deeply inquisitive iuto his deep
nor too remiss in the letter, nor too presump
tuous in the sense; gladly comprehending
what he may, and admiriug what he cannot
comprehend. Doth God call for his ear 1
He goes awfully iuto the Holy presence, and
so he hears as if he should uow hear his last,
catching every word that drops from the
preacher’s lip ere its falls to the grouud, and
laying it up carefully where he may be sure
to fetch it. He sits not to censure, but to
learn; yet speculation and knowledge is the
least drift of his labor, nothing is his own
but what he practiceth. Is he invited in
God’s feast ? He hates to ooine in a foul
and slovenly dress, but trims up his soul so
as it may be fife for a heavenly guest.
Neither doth he leave his appetite at
home cloyed with the world, but brings a
sharp appetite with him, aud so feeds as if
lie meant to live forever. All earthly deli
cacies are unsavory to him in respect to
that celestial manna. Shortly, he so eats
and drinks as one that sees himself set at
the table with God and his angels, and
rises and departs full of his Saviour, and
in the strength of that meal walks vigor
ously and cheerfully on towards his glory.
Finally, as he well knows that he lives and
moves and hath his being in God, so he
refers his life, motions and being wholly to
God; so acting all things as if God did
then by him; so using all things as
one that enjoys God in them; and, in the
meantime, so walking on earth, that he
doth in a sort carry his heaven with him.—
