Mayor Encourages Citizens To
Receive The Influenza Vaccine
MayorR.S. “Bob” Boney is en
couraging citizens of Lee County
to receive the influenza vaccine.
Annually, more than 20,000
Americans die each year due to
influenza related illness and the
number of fatalities increases to
40.000 during severe influenza
seasons. In 1999, influenza and
pneumonia were the seventh
leading cause of death in Geor
gia.
Influenza is a highly contagious
viral infection of the nose, throat,
and lungs that is one of the most
severe illnesses of the winter sea
son. Influenza is spread easily
from person to person usually
when an infected person coughs
or sneezes. Influenza is very eas
ily prevented. A highly effective
and cost effective vaccines has
been developed and is available
through many physician offices,
health departments and local
community pharmacies. The vac
cine is highly recommended for
certain "at-risk" populations such
as Georgians 50 years old and
older; persons with other under
lying health problems such as dia
betes. kidney problems, blood
disorders, immune system disor
ders, or chronic heart or lung dis
orders; women who will be in
their second or third trimester of
pregnancy during influenza sea
son; residents of nursing homes
or other long term care settings;
and health care workers.
The annual direct medical costs
(hospitalizations, physician office
visits, medications, etc. ) of in
fluenza are estimated at up to $4.6
billion with the total direct and
indirect costs (work and school
days missed) of a severe influ
enza epidemic are at least $12
billion. Each year, the average
number of hospitalizations attrib
uted to the influenza virus is
140,000. The number of hospital
izations climbs to more than
300.000 during a severe influenza
breakout. The influenza vaccine
can prevent up to 50 to 60 per
cent of hospitalizations and 80
percent of deaths associated with
influenza-related complication
among the elderly.
