By: J. Long
The residents of Lee County
Health Care received a really big
horse treat on October 25. The
Albany Mounted Patrol came out
to visit and strutted their stuff for
the staff and residents. Among the
members were Corporal Hawkins
riding Officer Zena; Corporal
Lavoie riding Officer Chief; and
Corporal Butler riding Officer
Amber. The residents enjoyed
petting the beautiful horses and
feeding them peppermint candies,
even though the candy lodged in
their teeth.
Corporal Hawkins is the train
ing officer for the horses. He
stated that it takes about five years
for a horse to be fully trained be
fore coming onto the force. The
extent of the training consists of
firing guns behind the horse's
back, shooting fireworks, and
other experiences. Corporal
Hawkins stated that the horses
have to be trained to the fullest to three are wonderful and gentle.
