"SOCKDOLOGY" placed first
in the field of seven Region 1-
AAAAA schools. Lowndes
County High captured the runner-
up title, and Colquitt County
High placed 3rd. Lee County's
Diana Garcia was named one of
the ten-member All-Star Cast,
and the group earned recognition
for excellence in costuming.
Most notably Emily Kitchens and
Joseph Wade of the LCHS cast
were named Best Actress and
Best Actor, respectively. The
competition was held in
Moultrie's Withers Civic Audito
rium on November 1st.
This championship title furthers
a tradition of region-level wins
for Lee County - 9 in the 10 years
of Robby Davis' tenure theatre di
rector. The group has gone on to
win the State Champion title for
the last four years in a row. Davis
admits that the past record places
unusual pressure on the group as
they move on to this year's state
competition on November 10th.
"Sure there's pressure. It's pal
pable. But we have this philoso
phy- 'We cannot insure success,
but we can deserve it.' We don't
aim to win. Never have. We aim
to surmount the obstacles of trav
eling a show to competition and
pull off a well executed perfor
mance that we're proud of. That's
where the satisfaction comes
from."
"Sockdology," a new play by
Jeffrey Hatcher, debuted at the
Alabama Shakespeare Festival in
1999. The play examines the a
assassination of President Lin
coln from the point of view of the
of the actors performing at Ford's
Theatre that fateful night in April
of 1865. The company, led by the

renowned Laura Keene, per
formed the famed play "Our
American Cousin," a favorite of
the President and all of America.
"Keene and her company even
performed 'Our American Cousin'
in Albany,' notes Davis. "One of
our faculty pointed out at Keene's
troupe performed more than once
- popular American comedies and
Shakespearean favorites-at the
old Tift Theatre above the Bridge
House on the Banks of the Flint."
The FCHS production of
"Sockdology" features Kitchens
as Laura Keene and Wade as her
deputy. Harry Hawk. The other
actors are portrayed by Laura
Ruckel, Brandon Burton. Cody
Kelley, and Diana Garcia. Blake
Cash, Jason Clark. Trey Jones and
Dylan Duke play other principal
roles in the show. Daniel Bass
plays Secretary of War Edwin M
Stanton who conducts the inves
tigation into the assassination and
immediately suspects Keene's ac
tors as conspirators. "All actors,"
Davis points out, "were suspects
in the days and weeks following
the murder." Rounding out the
cast are Josh Stripling, Brady
Hamlin, Andrew Humphries,
Lynwood Smith, Stephen Goss,
and Eric Clausen. There is a pro
duction of crew of some 25 stu
dents who assist with the monu
mental effort of staging the fast-
paced play. This crew is led by
stage managers Elizabeth Walters
and Ashley Torres and crew chief
Cornelus Miller.
Traveling to the state competi
tion imposes a huge financial bur
den on the theatre program. "Our
program is essentially self-sup
porting. Traveling to the region
competition was expensive. Go
ing to state competition will be
twice much," says Davis. The
group's booster club plans to re
double its efforts to solicit spon
sorships from companies and in
dividuals in the community. The
fundraising plans include an ad
ditional public performance of
"SOCKDOLOGY" this Thurs
day, November 8th at 8:00 p. m.
in the school's Clay Auditorium.
"We have several levels of spon
sorship established and each
comes with its own perks," Davis
adds. Interested sponsors of the
theatre arts program are invited
to call the theatre office at 229-
759-9005. Adult tickets are $7.00,
and student/child tickets are
$5.00

Retirees Stay Involved
Special To The Ledger
There are over 50,000 retired
educators in Georgia who are re
tired from Georgia public
schools, colleges, universities,
libraries and other education
agencies.
The Georgia Retired Educators
Association has 15,000 mem
bers, many of whom:
• Grew up in the Great Depres
sion when nothing was wasted,
everything was used until used
up, or “made-do”, and some
teachers were paid in scrip or not
at all.
• Entered the field of Educa
tion for love of learning and for
love of children and youth.
Sustained by their Faith, the
vast majority of retired educators
approached their task positively,
even passionately, trusting God,
speaking affirmatively, giving
generously or themselves, their
time and own funds to help boys
and girls.
Serving Georgia Retired Edu
cators since 1958, the Georgia
Retired Educators Association is
an organization that enhances re
tirement and fulfills the indi
vidual. Some of the purposes
are:
• To promote the economic, so
cial, and professional status of
retired educators and the ex
change of information of value
to them.
• To promote passage of legis
lation beneficial to retired edu
cators of Georgia.
• To promote the advancement
of high quality education to en
able educators to maintain their
interest in education and their
field of specialization.
• To promote the involvement
of retired educators in commu
nity service and the decision
making process in the state and
local communities.
• To promote a plan for active
educators to begin preparing well
in advance for retirement.
The Lee County GRE would
like to say thank you to all
present and retired educators for
dedicating your life to public
education. You have seen many
changes in education and educa
tion reform over the years. You
know that positive reform only
happens for our children and
employees when we stay in
volved in the process as retired
educators you are ambassadors
to the world for public education.
You can go places where those
who are still teaching cannot.
Together we will help preserve
public education for our children.
