The Lee County Board of Com
missioners gave their approval to
the proposed special purpose spe
cial option sales tax. Voters will
decide in March if they will ap
prove the continuation of collect
ing sales tax at the current rate. It
is anticipated that the current
SPLOST III funds will be col
lected by September 2002.
Since the maximum collection
of SPLOST funds is projected to
occur 19 months prior to the
March 31,2004 collection period
deadline, a referendum will be
scheduled Tuesday, March 19,
2002. At this time, voters will
continue the SPLOST for another
five years.
Based on the preceding
SPLOST - III collection trend, as
suming aggressive business
growth, Lee County can expect
to receive about $300,000 per
month or 18 million dollars over
the maximum five year period in
SPLOST - IV revenue beginning
in October 2002. In addition, the
Georgia Department of Transpor
tation usually matches every
county SPLOST dollar spent on
road projects with $0.75 of state
funds thereby greatly extending
the county's SPLOST funds.
If the voters approve the
SPLOST IV referendum, it will
become effective October 1,
2002.

The county commissioners con

night. Ralph Cannon requested a
conditional use of property to al
low a one time split of farm land
to allow a single family residence.
The property is located at 334
U.S. Highway 19 South, Lees

Pam Thompson of the planning
department presented a proposed
change to the Lee County Zon
ing Ordinance to allow adminis
trative approval for the one time
split of farm land request. The
current zoning ordinance requires
planning commission and board
of commissioners approval
through a public hearing process
to allow for a one time split of
farmland in agricultural districts.
The staff proposed to change the
process to allow administrative
approval. By having the staff ap
prove the change administra
tively, the county can streamline
the process and better serve the ning commission recommended
citizens of Lee County. The plan- denial of this proposal.
