The south is watching with indis-
I’.viised interest the efforts of lieed &
Co. to fasten a federal election law on
thcpcople of this section.
The senate, very much to the sur-
prise and disgust ot granny Edmunds
and grandpa Sherman, passed a free
coinage silver bill yesterday. Silver
is the poor man’s money, and it was
a crime when the demonitazation of
silver was perpetrated by the republi
cans in 1873.
The California Fruit-Grower ob
serves very' truly: “The fellow who
loafs around on the streets all day
and goes home to a wife, mother or
sister tvlio works hard to support him,
can tell you exactly what the country
needs to make it prosperous, what
policy a paper ought to pursue, and
what kind of matter it ought to use to
make it a glorious success.”
The candidate is abroad in the land.
He goeth forth, while yet the dew is
is on the grass, and he coninuelh
abroad, until the evening shadows fall.
At eventide he gathcreth his family
about him, and says to them :
"Behold your father! ‘‘vox populi,”
“many citiz.ens,” “voter,” “Patriot
and other writers have called upon
him to sacrifice himself upon the altar
of his country. And I have been
sacrificed; you’re a fool to be run
ning for office,’’ said Slathers to-day.
when I approached him. \cs. I am
a victim. But the country shall hear
Irom tnc yet,” and Blinkins slapped
his thigh to give emphasis to his last
remark.
Mary Marrys.
London, Julie IV—Miss Mary An
derson and Mr. Antonao Navarro,
were married to-day at «St. Mary s
liomau Catholic Church, at Hamp
stead. Miss Atulersou drove to the
church iu a carriage, the windows
and blinds were completely closed.
The ceremony was the plainest possi
ble. There was no choir present, the
music being rendered hy the organ.
Governor Stanley.
Brussels, June 16.—Henry M.
Stanley has been tendered and has
accepted the governor generalship of
the Congo Free state. He will not enter
upon his duties until the beginning of
1891, unless he should be called upon
to assume them earlier by King Leo
pold After his marriage Mr. Stanley
will proceed to the United States,
where he will remain until summoned
to enter upon his office.
The Farmers Growing Richer.
Last Sunday’s Constitution con
tained a comparative condition of
twenty-five average farmers, in each
couuty in the state in, 1S84 and in
1889. The Constitution, through its
correspondents, has given to the
people of Georgia, valuable informa
tion, as to the status of the farming
classes. In only nine counties, out
of the one hundred and thirty-eight,
in the state, do the farmers report a
decrease. These counties are, Camp
bell, Columbia, Coweta, Dougherty,
Harris, Jackson, Lincoln, Putman and
Stewart. This leaves one hundred
and twenty-nine counties showing an
increase. The aggregate decrease in
the nine counties was $63,900. The
aggregate increase in the other coun
ties was 81,290,333. Of course this
increase of more than one million, is.
traceable loathe twenty-five average far
selected at random in each
county. If they are a fair average,
then the farming classes of Georgia,
by a lair calculation, added between
forty and fifty millions to their wealth
between 1884 and 1889. The Geor-
gia farmer is hard to down.
South Georgia.
1 lu re is no other part of the state,
and, in fact, t o other part of the
south, in which there can be seen
more evidences of improvement and
pr isperity, than in South Georgia.
Not many years ago the greater part
of that section cf the state looked
very much like a wilderness, and many
of those who traveled through it
thought it would never be anything
more than a wilderness. A wonder
ful change, however, has taken place
in nearly all the counties inc tided in
it. As fast as the timber is removed
the land is put into cultivation. There
are hundreds of farms now, where only
a little while a .0 there was only the
unbroken forest. And they are excel
lent farms, productive and profitable.
They have neat dwellings and ample
outbuildings tor stock. They give
one the impression that their owners
arc thrifty and progressive, and are
satisfied with their surroundings and
prospects.
Along the line of the Brunswick and
Western ratiroad the evidences ol
changes for the better arc particularly
noticeable. The farmers along this
road have purchased this year,between
three and four hundred carloads of
fertilizers. They are giving a good
deal of attention to the cultivation of
long staple cotton, and they are meet
ing with encouraging success. It is
predicted by those who are in position
to know something of the changes
that arc taking place in South Geor
gia, that within 3 comparatively few
years the amount of long staple cot
ton and trmts and vegetables which
will be grown in that section will be
something a'mest beyond belief.
It has been known for a long time,
of course, that melons and the Le-
Conte pear grew to perfection in near
ly all parts of South Georgia, but the
extent to which these things are being
grown is only beginning to be ap
preciated, and the fact that the soil
and climate of that section are well
adapted to otner things than fruits
and vegetables is even now not gen-
arally known.
A prominent railroad man, who is
well acquainted with all parts of Geor
gia, stated a day or two ago that no
other part of the state was advancing
in material prosperity with such rapid
ity as the southern part. The people,
he said, had the appearance of pros
perity. That they were doing well
was shown by the fact that they paid
cash for what they bought, and were
constantly adding to the attractiveness
of their homes and making improve
ments on their farms.
It would not be at all surprising if
South Georgia should become the
garden spot ol the state. When the
movement of immigrants southward
begins in earnest a very large percent
age of it will be ir- tbe direction of
South Georgia, because there the con
ditions necessary for building up pros
perous communities—a healthful
climate and a productive soil—are
more satisfactory than almost any
where else.—News.
Their Eyes Opened.
Mr. Carlton, of the 9th district has
been at home mingling with his con
stituents for a few days. Sometime
ago Mr. Carlton announced against
the sub-tteasury plan, in very strong
terms. When asked about the status
of that new fangled idea, Mr. Carlton
replied:
“The bottom has dropped out of
the sub-treasury scheme. I found
a great reaction among the farmers.
They have gotten light on this subject,
and they sec that it will not only work
to their injury, but to the injury of the
country.”
Carlton, and a lew otticr congress
men, including our own Turner, had
the nerve to say, no when asked to
support the measure. Now that the
thing is going to pieces, lots of the
public will rush around and say that
they knew it would not work, all the
time.
South American Yellow Jack.
Washington .June HI.—Surgeon
General Hamilton of the marine hos
pital bureau hits been informed that
a second case of yellow fever has de
veloped on the British vessel Avon,
now detained at the Chandeleur quar
antine station. He ltas also received
a report from a special agent sent to
Merida, Yucatan, to investigate its
sanitary condition, that twelve cases
of yellow fever have occurred there
and that there are fears of an ep
idemic.
Good Abvice.
I hc Atlanta Journal, a strong ad
vocate of alliance principles, prints '
these timely words:
“There is really no necessity, nor j
even excuse, for antagonism between t
the Democrats and the alliancemen or
any other labor organization in tbe j
state. Such antagonism would be j
disastrous to both. It the national
democratic party is not the friend of
the farmers and of the working classes
generally, they have no friendly party
in this country. The agriculturalists
and working people cannot hope for
justice and proper consideration from
any other political parly than the
Democratic, and the Democratic
party cannot succeed without the sup
port of these great classes. ‘ United
they stand, divided they fall” together.
