Henry G Turner will be nominated
fur congress at Albany to-morrow.
The convention to nominate a can
didate for congress from litis district
will meet in Albany clay after to mor
row.
A majority of congressmen are on
the ragged edge; dancing on a hot
gridiron, so to speak. And the music
is lively.
When the retur; s arc all in it will
be found that, while many have iru
agined themselves called, but few will
be chosen,
All the resort correspondents say
that the “summer girl is a daisy.”
What about the winter girl ? She is a
“charmer,”or something of that sort.
The lightning will soon strike
Kcmmler. And the brittle thread of
life will sharply snap, with the first
contact of the subtile fluid.
Thirty counties in G:orgia—and
they ar t all small ones—show an in-
crease in values of more .ban six mil
lions since last year. This is a most
gratifying exhibit. Georgia grows.
The Central has purchased the Ty-
bee road. And now two or three
other roads say they were going to
buy it. But they were too late. The
tra isfer of the road means a better
service.
One of the authors of “licautiful
Snow” died the ether day. We nave
been hoping that they were all dead.
The last victim’s name is J. W. Wat
son. Well, Watson is dead, at least.
There’s some comlort in that.
All the democtats in the senate are
loaded with speeches on the tariff bill.
They are talking against time, trying
to stave off action on the force bill.
Morgan, of Alabama, can easily speak
ten days on any subject. Go in, Mr.
Morgan.
Here is the latest thing in wedding
announcements: Smith—llrown,—
He is 25 and she is 20. He is 6 feet
i inch and she is 5 feet ii inches. He
weighs 156 pounds and she weighs 120.
He is fond of fat and she is fond of
lean. He is a democrat and she is a
republican. They both belong to the
Presbyterian Church. They have al
ways been meant for each other. J'ux
ivbitctim.
Blaine’s recent utterances would in
dicate that lie expects a cyclone to
strike the republican party in 1S92;
and that he is digging a cyclone
pit to crawl into. Astute man, that
same Mr. Llainc. In the emergency
referred to a democratic hole is a
mighty safe place, Mr. Blaine. And
we have room lor every repentant sin
ner.
Come ye, that thirsteth lor the truth,
and hunger for the right, the demo
cratic party will give you both.
During the Cleveland administra
tion, whenever there was an increase
of imports, the New York Tribune at
tributed it to the connivance of demo-
cratic custom house officers with the
importers. But last Monday that re
publican organ said editorially: “It
is not a good sign that imports at New
York for three weeks have exceeded
last year’s by 33 per cent., while ex
ports have fallen below last year’s for
two weeks by 20 percent. July im
ports of last year exceeded exports by
$19,500,000, but this year the value of
imported goods threatens to be the
largest ever known in any month.”
Tom Woolfoik to Hung.
The supreme court has affirmed iIn
decision of the court below, and Tom
Woolfoik will be rc-sentenced and hung
But, just here comes in a new com
plication in this celebrated case.
Judge Gustin, who presided at die
various trials, and who sentenced
Wool oik, has resigned, and Judge
Miller, who succeeded Judge Gustin,
having been counsel in the case, is in
eligible to preside and pass sentence.
It wi I be necessary to call in some
oilier judge 10 pass sentence. And
this judge, whoever he may be, may
have scruples about sentencing a man
to be hung whom he did not try. It
is optional with the court to sentence
Woolfoik to be hung, or to the peni
tentiary for life. After all, it would
seem, this red-handed murderer, may
escape the gallows.
An Anthropologist’s Proposition.
In ail address 011 Tuesday night be
fore what is called the Academy of An
thropology, Mr. William! McLaury
urged earnestly that woman should
not be tried before juries of meu, hut
before juries of women. The liner
natures of women, said the doctor,
make them understand woman far
more readily and correctly than men
do; and they should have the benefit
of this greater refinement of judgment.
That may lie the anthropological
view, hut is it the view of women?
Do they waut to come under the lire
of the keener perceptions of their own
sex? Wo have henrd no such desire
expressed among them, and we doubt
if Dr. McLaury makes himself a hero
among women because of his prop
osition.
If lie should put it the other way
aud demand that men should have the
benefit of the liner natures of women
jurors, his proposition might find wi
der approval. Women have the ad
vantage of the consideration for their
sex which is felt by juries of men.
and meu might hail with joy the pros
pect of exciting the compassion of
women juries.
Dr. McLaury may he a great an
thropologist, but lie would be a poor
legislator.—New York Sun.

Atlanta’s Great Dailies.
The Atlanta Constitution and the
Atlanta Journal are largely responsi
ble for the prospective triumph of
Livingston in the fifth district. It is
their district, and it is to lie supposed
that they have considerable influence
in it, especially in view of the boast
which both of them almost constantly
make of their woudcrful circulation.
But with great bundles of their papers
going into every county in the district,
witli the democratic voters of each
county in'doubt as to whether they
should favor or oppose the sub-treas
ury scheme—the only issue in the dis
trict canvass—and with the wily dem
agogue, Livingston, working on the
passions and the prejudices of the
masses, and raising iu their minds
false and hurtful hopes—with all these
incentives to a bold, open, constant
setting forth of the truth, not one vo
ter in the distiict, outsido of the edi
torial rooms of those papers, knows
where thsy stand on the vital question.

Reckless Reed.
Tom Reed continues to count a
quorum whenever it suits the republi
can party. We have fallen upon
strange times. Seven years ago a re
publican member of the Illinois Legis
lature refused to vote and broke the
quorum. Speaker Collins telegraphed
to Mr. Blaine to know if he could not
count the member who would not vote.
He got the following reply :
Washington, April 13, tSS3.
L. C. Collin*, Speaker llointc of Jirjire-
fentathw, Springfield, 111.:
Members in their seats not voting
cannot be counted in any way what
ever, They may be censured by the
Speaker for failing to perform their duty,
but the Speaker cannot take cogniz
ance of their presence except as they
respond to the roll call.
