•‘The Bivouac of the Dead.”
A Kentuckian writes in the Courier
Journal an interesting sketch of how
this famous poem wa< written. Its
story dates back to the battle of Ilucna
Vista. Feb. 23. 1847, when the whole
Mexican army, under Santa Anna, de
filed around a mountain pass and sum
moned 5,000 Americans under Taylor
to surrender. The reply was, “Gen
Taylor never surrenders," and at it the
two went to fight it out. In the terri
ble battle that followed Taylor was
victorious, and thereby won the presi
dency for himself. But many among
the flower of his officers were killed
among them young Harry Clay, I lest
son of Henry Clay.
Clay’s death was mourned as a c d un
ity by the whole stale. !i ’I ' s

i nmortal poem, “The Bivouac of the
Dead.”
The body of Col. O’Hara himselt
was brought to Frankfort, Ky , in Oo
tober, 1874, and buried. On this oc
casion his own poem was recited above
tils remains and those of two other
officers who were laid to their final rest
at the same time in the Frankfort cem
etery. The poem has been quoted at
a hundred soldier funerals. The cor
rect version ot the first stanza, the Ker-
tuckian says,is this:
Tlicnmflled drum’s eat roll tins bent

No more on life's parade shall meet
