The Melon Index, published at
Pelham, fills a long felt want; and so
do the melons.
Since the big slump in silver, the
gold-chloride cure has increased in
popularity. Keely keeps to the front.
Mr. J. 0. Kemper, the well known
liveryman, of Tallahassee, is dead.
He was a public spirited and useful
citizen.
South Carolina is pretty well bottled
up. Tilman, the head barkeeper, has
fixed the price of corkage. He’s a
corker, himself.
The Independent Farmer.
The farmer, after all, is the most
independent man living. It he
makes his own supplies, and he ought,
panics and financial depressions do
not hurt him seriously. He is in
finitely better oil than the town man.
Bill Arp, in one of his letters to the
Constitution, alter reviewing the res
port of Comptroller General Wright,
in which is shown tho largo increase
in farm lands and other property, says:
Of course tho largest increase is
in city property aud banking capital
and railroads, the last named having
grown from $1)00,000,000 to $42,000,-
000. But the farmer need not be
envious of those who invest in lliesc
things. Merchants fail, bunks ciu-
peud and railroad* go into receiver,
hands. The larger the venture the
greater the tisk, and there is no in
vestment so solid and sccuio as a
good farm with a good lariucr and his
family living on it. Fur ages the
comforts and happiness of ruial lile
havo been the theirns of poets and
philosophers. In times ot like theta,
when business is stagnant and Ing
enterprises are crushing to insolvency
aud thousands of workmen are thrown
out of employment, the farmer alone
is sale. He depends 141011 lus Maker
for sunshine and lor rain and upon
his land to reward his labor. Ho is
remote from the temptations of socie
ty. His sous are not in jail nor his
daughters smirched with scandal.
Indeed, if he will compare his in- biCYCl.KS >x
dependence and comfort with the
rich who dwell in the cities he will
find the balance sheet largely in I113
favor.”

Ben Russell is looking after his con
stituents in Washington. A dispa'.ch
from that city says:
Representative Russell calied cn the
president to-day to see what he could
get for South Georgia, and also to put
in a word for Mr. Atkinson. When
he mentioned the speaker of the Geor
gia house, Mr. Cleveland said: "I
would like to give Mr. Atkinson some
thing, but I am afraid J will be unable
to give him Berlin. Do you know if
he would take anything else?”
“I do not,” said Mr- Russell,
“Well 1 will take it up later, and .1
I can serve him in any other way, I
should like to do it. But now about
South Georgia."
Colonel Russell then launched out
into a strong talk for his constituents.
He spoke especially fo : Judge Under
wood.
Mr. Cleveland said he would pro
vide for the judge. He was outspoken
in saying that South Georgia seemed
to have got very little, but said it had
been an oversight and, ‘ot course, tvas
not intended.” ‘I will see Mr. Quincy,’
he said, “and ask hitn to send h:s
recommendations for candidates from
South Georgia as it must be provided
for.” Here the interview ended.
