Several ahlppers prepaid the freight
and shipped melons to New York
yesterday. That market is doubtless
a good one now, owing to the fact
that shipments have been virtually
stopped lor the past two days by the
order of the Pennsylvania road and
the Ocean Steamship Company de
manding prepayment of freight to
that point.
A feature of the Confederate re
union at Birmingham will be a tab
leau of beaulilul women from the ex-
Confederate States. Each State will
furnish one youog lady who is expect
ed to be the prettiest unmarried wo
man of the State from whence she
comes. We notice that quite a num
ber of the States have made their
selections, but Georgia is among those
not yet represented, We would sug
gest that Columbus can very easily
furnish the representative for the em
pire State, and she ought to do iu—
Columbus Eoqdrer-Sun.
The prettiest girl in Georgia lives in
Thomanlle, but we understand that,
on account of a previous engagement,
she will not be present at Birmingham
on the occasion referred to.
Tho Atlanta Herald of yesterday
says: “Treasurer Hardeiunn had liis
attention called this morning to the
report sent in from Brunswick in
regard to the closed State hank of
that city, which was a state deposito
ry-
•‘He said ho knew nothing about
the aflttirs of tho hank, but lie knew
that the state was amply protected.
Not only lias it a superior Hue upon
all the assets of tho bank, but the
sureties to whom it chiefly looks for
reimbursement are worth ten times
the amount due the state, which is
about 830,000. Treasurer Hordes
man insists that the state will collect
its claim within the next thirty days.”
Lieutenant Peary's exploring
steamer Falcon left Philadelphia lost
night for ,New York, en route lor
Polar seas. It is a big undertaking
for such a comparatively small craft;
yet nothing that experience or science
could suggest has been omitted from
her equipment. Setting forth not
only well supplied iu every material
sense, but with os stout-hearted a
crew as ever faced the Arctic wastes,
the Falcon may be depended upon to
make history fur the world, as well as
to win glury fur her daring naviga
tors.—Philadelphia Record.
An exchange has this curious item:
“A Texas man was tried for the mur
der of a neighbor who was missing,
and had been identified in the person
of a dead man on the highways. He
admitted the crime and was sent to
the penitentiary. When the self-con
fessed murderer reached the peuiten-
tiary he found bis supposed victim,
and aleo one of the jurors who had
tried him iu tho penitentiary. It, is
puzzling case; but it shows that the
coarts are trying to do their work in
Texas.”
Along with the other train of evils
which have overtaken South Corolma
within the past few years, is the ap
pointment, by Tillman, of constables
to watch the dispensaries in order to
report any infractions of the law. These
men are to be unknown iu each com
munity. They will be spies, pimps
ot the governor and his gang. Ver
ify South Carolina has fallen very low.
At the opening of Daly’s theatre in
London Miss Ada Rehan read a poem
closing with the line: “Hail lor Col
umbia ! God save tlio Queen!” The
sentiment is sound, but not new, it
having been used before iu the fa
miliar molt): “Erin go Uuum, E
Pluribus Bragh!” >
Governor Altgeld couldn't Iks
