The homo of Mr. John W. Everett in
Fan-view, near the compress \y«» totally
destroyed by Are Friday. The house
won bnrwud to the ground, und much of
the furniture with it. Fortunately Mr
Everett was insured to about three
fourths the value of his loss, as lie car
ried $750 on hU house and #00 on iii*
furu tare.
Mr. Everett’s home was a neat one story
cottage- ii»*ar tho Atlautic Compress
Oompatoy*# plant in Fair view. About
half paMttc.-u o’clock Friday morning,
a Are was started in the kitchen stove
to prepare dinner. Mrs. Everett had
gone to a neighbor's to carry some soup
to a sick child. When she started back
home, she saw smoke pouring from tjit*
doors and windows. An alarm was
immediately tamed in und the depart
ment made a quick ran to the scene.
The flro had evidently started in tin 1
wood box, by coals falling from the
stove. It had apparently, gained little
headway and was readily extinguished.
The tiremuu cut u hole in the roof and
made what they declare was u most,
iirct'ul examination, but lolled to And
any evidence of lurking 'flames. They
mfc the holigo supposing that the trouble
was aii over.
The Are could uot iihvo been put com
pletely out, as nlxmt au hour later it
broke oat again fTOW the roof. This
time tho lOitiru bock of tho house was a
mass of dames before th# department
reached there. They quickly made
their water connection, and might have
saved tho house but for tho fact two
lengths of hoso proved untrustworthy
and sprung leaks and two couplings
bond. The damage was quickly repair
ed but before any water could ls> turned
ou, the house was gone beyond redump
tion. Seeing that it could not bo saved
the department turned their attention
to tiie compress nearby which was iu
imminent danger of couilagration. They
worked hard and kept tho plank from
catching on flro.
During tho first alarm a portion
farnitaro had bocu removed from the
back to the front of the house, and this
was saved, though most of the contents
wore lost. Mr. Everett hod a neat, well
furnished home, aud that sn unfortu
nate chain of circumstances caused
to bo destroyed is regretted by his
many friends.
