THINK OF THIS GIRL.
Sho was fifteen years old and was
earning four dollars a week. That’s
very good, you sav, and ought comfor
tably to support a careful girl. But
j w»it a little. This girl whs supporting
j not only herself, but her invalid mother
| and three younger children! Her four
I dollars paid for their rout and bought
their coal and clothes and food. Every
| applo and potato—hut it was not often
they saw anything besides bread—abso
lutely everything they ate must iu some
way cooio out of the four dollars a week.
How much money do you think this girl
could spend on her Own clothes? And
how neat and nice could Bhe keep Jier-
self? Remember she had to work early
and late, and there was no hath tub,
hardly a baud basin, in the little clut-
tered-up room where they lived. What
chaueu did she have? t How much of the
natural pleasure ef girlhood was com
ing to the i oo , dirty dad •/, gentle and
affectionate (hough she was?
Hut therecai.no a change. The moth-
grew' worse and wus taken to the hos
pital. The three younger children were
placed in a temporary refuge and the
home was broken up. Then Annie, the
breadwinner, came to our Home for
Working Girls.
Very modestly fnrnishod are onr
clean, bright rooms, but they seemed
like a palace to the thin-faced, grimy,
big-eyed girl. All the clothes she had
in the w'orid were in a little hand satch
el.
“Now, my dear, you want a bath, I
know,” said the kind, sisterly deaconess
the first evening. “I’ll go with you
and show you how to turn on the warm
wafer and such things. Now soap the
wAsli cloth well, so, till it’s all covered
with lather. And here’s a nice, clean
nightgown for you. Aud in the morn
ing you must put on these other clothes
aud leave your own for the wash”
—quite as if these were little attentions
customarily shown now bourdors,
What a revelation that first hath of
her life was to this girl! What a lux
ury of cleanliness she found in the clean
gown and iifresh, white undeiclothes?
With how little sacrifice of her self-re-
■pect she had been initiated into the
ways of decent liviug? How much
these few short weeks will mean to her*
Aud how much more the' fluding of
friends—loving, wiso, helpful friends
—iu these deaconesses who will no*, lose
sight of her even after she leaves them
aud takes up again the heavy, even if
sweet, burden of the support of her fam
ily.
Is it not worth while to reach out a
hand of loving help to these straggling
girls? Does it not truly illustrate ttie
real spirit of Christianity? Is it not
what Jesus would have us do?—Chris

THE GRAVES CASES.
Judge Speer Decides in Favor of New
York People.
A case that has been of great interest
throughout South Goorgia, for several
years is that of Mrs. Jennie L. Graves
j vs. H. T. Crawford, et, nl. The case
has been in litigation for uauy years,
aud involves a considerable amount of
property. Mrs. Graves lives in Court*
land Now York, but wus here with her
daughter last winter and has spent sev-
eeal other winters in ThomasviUe.
The Moultrie Observer says the case
has been decided, but as yet the decree
of the judge lias not reached here,
this case petitioners prayed that deeds,
etc , held by defendants, Crawford,
Ashhurn aud McMullen, be canceled
plaintiff s claiming that same was a cloud
on their titles aud that they be awarded
damages for the timber and turpeutme
on the lots. '
Judge Speer ordered the bill as to Mr.
Crawford dismissed, holding that- he
wus so fur unrelated to grievances of
which iietitioners complained, that a
court of equity had no jurptdiettou as to
him.* It is uuderstood that Judgo Speer
grauted the prayers of petitioners as to
Mr. Ashhurn and Mr. McMullen,
until the decree is received it will be
impossible to say just what is the status
of the case.
