searched the worjd over f&r a type
ot reflect in his hero, he could
not have chosen better than Chris
tie Mathewson.
Even Matty’s latest achieve
ment—beating, disease and bccom-
ing
fits
it marks tho fulfillment, of un aft-
exprested desire, cue that even
the consuming germ of tho white
plague could not destroy.
Standish's hero became a na
tional idol lor American boyhood
through his clean sportsmanship
efforts and his athletic skill. Mat
ty, through actually living the
same life, became tile baseball
idol of the entire nation, and will
forever reign in memory as
America’s greatest pticher.
Like “Mcriwcll,” Mattty was a
football star in college. He was
even greater in this capacity than
as a baseball player at Bucknell.
He was 'rated the best punter and
Mcrriwell, Matty was a pitcher.
No man living-could duplicate
his feat of pitching three out of
five games in the 1905 world se
ries and winning ail three of them
by shutting out the Athletics and
holding them to 14 hits. Merri-
well might do that in fiction.
.! But, even more striking is Mat-
Jy’e resemblance to the Tip Top
l.crcy in his dogged figging that
overcame every obstacle.
“Big Six” pitched for the Giant*
fr.r 15 seasons. In that time ho
pitched more games than any oth
er National League twirlcr has
ever done. Thirteen years he won
419 or more games. He participat.
od in more world series gume*
han nny other*pitcher.
Mi:tty did this because nt hie
brain. Because of his ability , to
impartially judge himself, sec his
faults, and correct them.
Three years after Ue went with
McGraw the old arm weakened.
Matty developed a slow ball and
slow curve. He mixed these wtih
his speed, and dazzled the league
five years more. Another ilowup
came—but the bushes didn’t claim
Mathewson. He worked until he
perfected his fadeaway ball, and
with this and his marvplous con
trol ko became even' greater than
before, ....
Mcrriwell was always glad to
teach kids. Matty never tired of
helping rookies.
'l'hcn came -ho war, and, liko
Merriwcil, Matty enlisted, and
went to France. Flu and gas
brought on tuberculosis. “Big
Six” was pronounced dying.' Thir
teen months in bed did not daunt
his spirit. Neither did ho weak
en in the rest of his fight. Like
Frank Mcrriwell in a simili
sition, he won.
