“ Population,” says an able writer,
dwindled, and commerce, arts, wealth
and freedom all disappeared! Tiie
people withe reduced by poverty and
misery to the most degraded condi
tions of serfdom and slavery. The
disintegration of society was almost
oomplele. The conditions of life
» were so hard, that individual selfi-li-
ness was the only tiling consistent
with the instinct of self-preservation.

shrivelled and disajipeiired as the vol

Can the policy of demonetization
and forced resumption ot specie pay
ments in geld work differently in
America from what it did in En.hmd?
Can the policy of contracting the
volume of the ofin ericy prove less dis
astrous now than it ptoved to civili-
Zitiott between the beginning of the
Christian era and ilie filteenth ccn
tarv, when it destroyed the civiliza
tion of the world and engulfed man
kind in misery and darkness ? We
think not. We believe that the men
w ho talk and the journals which write
so slightly about “ the single stan
dard” and tlie necessity of niaimuir-
ing “the pledged faith of the Gov
ernment” have but a very imperfect
conception ot what their policy will
bring upon themselves and the coun
try if it be carried out.
The gold men lias represented that
the resumption of specie payments in
gold will be all easy thing because the
premium of gold has been reduced lo
an insignificant pet cent age. It is re
markable that litis was the very
argument used by the E .glish re-
stiinpiionists in support of the policy
which, when put in operation,.low
ered the wages of labor, 1 educed the
wdne of real .u:d personal property
thirty-three percent, ami bankrupted
the kingdom. Mr. Ricardo, who led
that movement, said, in the, British
Houpo of Commons, in 1819:
“The question is not deserving
half an hour’s consideration of the
House. The difficulty is only that of
ra’sing the currency three per cent,
in value.’’
Aflcr the fearful consequences of
the resumption measure had fallen
upon the oountry, Mr. Ricardo
changed his views, and on his death
