In Augusta Hon. Bobt. II. May was
elected Mayor by a majority of 634
over his opponent, Hon. Charles Es
tes, the vote l>ei..g, for May, 2,209
lor E-tes, 1,575. All the candidates
for Aldermen on the May ticket were
elected. The vote polled fell 547
short of the regis rations. The day
did not pass without bloodshed. A
young while man named Major Spinx
was knocked down in a fight, one ne
gro man received a flesh wound in the
neck from a pistol shot by Spins, and
another negro man was slabbed bex
tween the eyes, but the wound did
not prove serious. In the second ward
a Chiram.m voted for Estes, which is
tlie first time a Chinaman ever voted
in Augusta, and, as far as we know,
the first instance of the kind in Geor

important and essential character.

and fully recognized, but universally
respected and sought after. Hia es-.

period preceedingau election in which
the campaign is organized, or in more
modern political parlance, the wires

those weightier issues such ior in

the finance question. His importance
is manifested and more deeply felt

with that pride, wbicu alone swells the
bosom ol the victorious ward politi

It is well known that the lintnai;
body contains bumors and aciilg, simi
lar in aerionlo, and hnvinga ike ten
dency towards, baser metals, as nitric
and sulphuric acids have, namely, to
tarnish or dissolve them, varying in
quantity to different persons; of this
theory we have abundant proof in the
effect* which the wearing of jewelry
produces on different persons. Thou
sands wear continually, without any
ill effect, the cheaper class of jewelry
with brass ear wires, while if others
wore tlie same article for a few days,
they would be troubled with sore ears;
or, in other words, the acids contained
in the system would so act to produce
ill results. Instances have occurred
in which articles of any grade h low
eighteen carats have been tarnishe l in
a few days, merely front the aluve
named causa. True, these instances
are not very frequent; nevertheless, it
is as well to know them; every case is
net the fault of the goods not wearing
well—as it is generally called—but th«
result of the particular constitution by
which they are worn.

one of its most delightful meeting*,
Friday night last ‘at Mr. Thos. Flem

enjoyed themselves exceedingly. The
young men did their part nobly, by
bringing out a large number of tlie la

tlie presence ol Dr. Mell and I is wife,
Mrs. XX’right and several of her fasci

The programme, though short, was
unusually attractive, especially the
rendition of “Sleep, Soldier, Sleep, thy

“Poem on the merits of the M. L.

our brightest young ladies. Moreover
tlie songs “Market Day,” and “The
