Yx: Local Gosh t q Atlanta. —Tues-
day last, taking the l> a. vl train, in
company with Major Denham and J.
A. Erwin, Esq , wo made a pleasant
run to Atlanta, in three hour.,; by the
this ace umnodAtion train is a
nice ndfflr; the conductor is a clever
aiiJ wt-li-bred p oth.iiian; the coach i
vm clean art 1 mi'.t, and is really one of
the most desirable traiu-j on the road, i
ho far aa our station is concerned. —
Punctually its cits you down at tile

Success to it; we hope it will pay, it
ought to, for it U areal accomrhoda
lion to us, and others below. We
tnnko our best bow to the railroad au
thorities for this schedule.
We had not visited our capital for
some months, and we had as well ‘own
up,’ wo were surprised at its rapid
growth, aud cosmopolitan appearance;
here, -Jew and Gentile meet from all
quarters; here are Englishmen and
Irishmen, Welsh, Scotchmen, Russians;
Prussians, German, Italians, and per
hapa nearly all nationalities. Some of
the houses struck as us princely —equal
to those found in old aud wealthy ci
ties. We felt that wo are in a city,
sure enough. It is simply marvelous
how such a city could be built in the
last throe or font- years, if we except
Chicago. Whore did the money come
from th at built it ? What sustains it
and keeps it prospering ? are questions
asked daily. While these are being
put in astonishment another novel
springs up and puts other e(Tarts iu the
filiude, viz: the mam math new hotel,
now raising its lingo proportions from
its fouu la'ions, covering nearly one
acre of land and perhaps will cost half
million dollars — there, now ! that’s why
Atlanta grows; there is enterprizo and
allergy in her citizens; home capital
and Northern, are uniting, and the re
sult will be still more remarkable in
the next live years. Well, ca.ll it a
parvenne, upstart, or anything you
will, but we might as well yield the
fact that if it is not now l , it will be the.
city of Georgia.
Barvesting continues; wheat good;
more rain; more grass, more work,
but that is being done with a hearty
g )od will. We are proud of our far
mers; uo whore can .a more intelligent
and energetic sc*L be found. They are
rising from poverty to affluence as fast
as any, since the war. Gents, here’s
our hand.
Oottou 18cfa. Sell, ye “honest far
mers,” before it goe* to that inevita
ble price, loots; it is likely that cotton
is higher to-day, than it. will be again
ior live years. Why hold it to swell
out tho heavy receipts of the coming
crop ?
Business dull—goods in abundance,
prices favorable to buyers.
Our Coaucilmen are having one
street put in order. Thank you. gen
tlemen, continue, and don't forget
that splendid road to tho Fair Ground.
There ! Bro. Toon, of that excellent
paper, “The Southwestern Baptist,’’
has goue arid called our Station aeit/ !
We would not have thought it or him;
there are st> many cities up the country
we hoped that our station would es
cape such a nomenclature, but he lias
printed it lxis in paper ! and —well, we
rue sorry. “No more of that Hal an
ye love us.”
Prays t Meeting —Lot all remem

Churoh this, Wednesday night, this is

Boots and Shoes. —We cun truth
fully Hav, without disparagement to
others, that the best pan’ of boots we
ever wore, wo bought of Henry Banks
& Son, Atlanta. We bought them
nearly one year ago, and expect to
have them one year hence, and wear
them in the future as in the past, the
best portion of the time. If you want
goods in this line, this is the place to
get them. They have, perhaps, the
best stock of Boots, Shoes, Leather,
&0., to be found in the city of Atlanta.
Hats. —-Messrs. Salmons & Alexan
der, some weeks since, opened a bran
new Hat Store in Atlanta, where can
be found everything usually kept in
that kind of a store, and the beauty of
it is their eati'C stock is all fresh and
fashionable. We have known Mr.
ffalmmm for many' years, and can say
truthfully that he is a geutleman in
the strictest sense, of the word, a fine
business man, and well worthy of pa
tronage, See their card.
New Whkat. —We understand that
William L. Rowland is delivering to
day the first new wheat delivered at
this depot, which was sold to Messrs.
N. Gilreath & *Sbn, for $1.25 pr. bush.
We learn that Mr. Rowland has
sold these parties 3,000 bushels at $l
- pr. bushel, to be delivered by 4th
«£ July.

Evils of Dram-Drinking.
That drunkenness invariably has its
beginning in moderate drinking, no
one will pretend to deny, for the prop
osition is demonstrated by common ex
perience and observation. What then
is the duty in the premises, of every ra
tional, accountable being, who has his
own good and the good of others at
heart ? But one answer can be given
to the question. Every reasonable and
reflecting person will say: “Abstain
from a practice that may possibly do
ourselves, and others who may be influ
enced by our example, such incaicuable
and irreparable injury.” It is true that
there are isolated instances where per
sons have been known to indulge in
the habit of moderate drinking for a
life-time, without realizing any person
al injury by it; but in such cases, who
can tell how many, of different temper
aments, who have been surrounded by
different circumstances and who pos
sessed the power of self-control in an
inferior degree, have been ruined by
their example forever ! Thero is an
other fact in connection with this sub
ject, which should be remembered by
us all, and that is, that the evils which
result from dram-drinking, are more
easily prevented than cured, for there
is very little hope for the confirmed
drunkard. Nothiug but Omnipotent
aid can save him from the dreadful
fate which awaits him. Then young
men, beware of the first step which
“leads to hell, down by the chambers
of death.” The Sabbath School and
Church of God are secure retreats from
sin and death, while the places of
amusement aud dissipation, whither
many of your class resort, are calcu
lated to destroy your respectability and
happiness for life, and to render you
miserable forever. I will conclude rny
remarks on this subject, by reproduc
ing some simple lines which I compos
ed sometime ago, hoping that some
thoughtless, erring youth may see
them, and be profited by their peru
sal. They are addressed
To A Young Dram-Drinker.
Beware young man ! O stop and think,
Before you take another drink !
There s pleasure in tho sparkling cup,
But it will burn your substance up!
Desist, and shun the drunkard’s fate,
Or you will mourn when ’tis too late ;
I know there's rapturo in the cup,
But it will blast your fondest hope.
A'our way leads on to ruin’s brink,
One step you take when e'er you drink ;
With rapid strides ’e,ro long you’ll go
To search the depths of endless woo !
Is happiness on earth your aim ?
Then shun the paths of sin and shame ;
Avoid the fool.sh ones who stray.
Or they will make you bad as they.
And would you find a brighter shore
When you can live on earth no
Be warned in time! from ruin shrink,
Aud never take another drink !

The Living Machine.
I ijure the main spring of a watch and
efery portion of the works becomes disor
dered. The human stomach is to the hu
man sys’em what that elastic piece of metal
i« to a chronometer. It. influences tho ac
tion of the other organs, and controls, to a
certain extent, the whole living machine. —
The comparison may be carried further: foi
es the weakness and other imperfections of
the main spring is indicated on the face ol
the time-piece, so also is the weakness or
other disorder of the stomach betrayed by
the face of the invalid. The complex : on is
sallow or faded the eyes are deficient in lus
tre and intelligence, and there worn, anx
ious expression in the whole countenance
which tell as plainly as written words could
do, that the great nourishing organ, whose
office it is to minister the wants of the body,
and to sustain and renew all its parts, is
not performing its duty. It requiics reno
vating and regulating, and to accomplish
this end llostetter.s Stomach Ritters may be
truly said to be the one thing needful. The
broken main spring of a watch may be re
placed by anew one, but the stomach can
only be repaired and strengthened, aud this
is one of tae objects of the famous vegetable
restorative which for eighteen years has
been waging a successful contest with dys.
pepsia in all climates. Asa specific for in
digestion it stands alone. When the resour
ces of the pharmacopoeia have been exhaus
ted, without, at best, doing more than miti
gating the complaint, a course of this whole
some and palatable, yet powerful'stomachic
effect? a perfect and' permanent cure. In
all cases of dyspepsia the liver is more or
less disordered, and upon this important
gland, as well as upon the stomach and bow
els, the bitters act with singular distinct
ness, regulating and reinvigorating every
secretive and assimilating organ on which
bodily and mental health depend.
