In a glowing and very striking ar
ticle on development and prosperity if
the South, the Memphis Appeal says:
In every part of the South the pick
and the .shoael are doing the work of
ditchi sg an 1 embankment. The iron
ties are biud.ng us evt ry day more
strongly, and the steam engines are
shortening the hours that separate our
towns and cities. In Virginia, the
great v orks projected by the illustri
ous Maury—one: the Chesapeak and
Ohio Railroad—are under way; and
the other the ship-canal from the James
to the Ohio, is regarded as the work
of a day not distant. Immigration,
the best evidence of peace and thrift
on the part of the native population,
has added to her wealth; and now in
dustries, pr ijectcd and running, prom
ise for the blessed oi l mother of States
a fuiu e more profitable than all her
j ast put toget er. In the Carolina-'
the fever of progress is high. Various
crops, the use of fertilizers, immigration
and new railroads, are all doing the
work of advancement, and steeling
under the management of the “old
stock of people"’ a vast material pros
perity.”
In Georgia, the Empire Southern
St tte, the State of railroads, of cotton
mills, and of manufactures—where the
people have but one inimating spirit—
t'iat of progress—the sdvai:cement
si ice 1866 Ims been almost beyond be
li f. Over four hundred miles ol raii
r sad have been opened and fifteen
hundred projected during that time;
and the factories of Cilumbus and Au
gusta have more than quadrupled their
work ng-force a: and machinery. Aud
all th s c mies of the unaided energies
of the peop’e of that great Slate.
The txampi, of Georgia uas not
been lost ou Alabama or Misiss.ppi.—
Manufactures as well as agriculture
have ma<ie rapid advances iu both
States. The fir. numeJ has completed
since the war, over two hundred miles
of .railroad, and has raoie than one
thousand projected. Her mineral le
s mrces are attracting capital, and si e
promises iu a few years to be as pio
ductive in coal and iron as Pennsylva
nia. Mississippi has con pleted more
than two hundred miles of railroad,
but she has, like all her sisters of the
South renewed nearly every mile of
the 802 she had opened in 1804. Plur
ida has not been idle. Improvement
and progress have also been the order
of the day. Her natural productions
have attracted the attentiou of the peo
ple of the North, and she is reaping a
handsome prolit from the thousands
of additional white hands guided by
white intelligence aud determination.
Since 1866 her railroad system has
1 grown over 100 miles, and she has
some three hundred under contract
and being surveyed.”
Ballou’s Month!) Magazine.
The July number of Ballou’s Month
ly Magazine is tho commencement of
the Thirty-second Volume. Its pop
ularity is now so great that no maga
zine in the country stands higher in the
estimation of the people for genuine
interest and excellence. Each num
ber contains 100 pages of reading mat
ter—stories, poems, historical events,
wit and humor, a housekeeping depart
ment, and from sixteen to twenty il
lustrations, of noted scenes and places.
All this can be obtained for $1.50 per
year, or fifteen cents single copy; and
club terms are even cheaper. Thomes
& Talbot, Boston, Mass., are the pub
lishers.
The Upas Tree. —The general belief
that the Upas tree is poisonous is
wrong. Careful investigation shows
that it is not the tree that poisons the
air to such an extent that neither plant
nor animal can live within the range
of its influence, but certain sulphurous
or other gases coming from volcanoes
in the vicinity where the Upas is al
ways found. It is the only thing the
poisonous miasma has no influence ©n,
hence the assertion of Dr. Poerscb,
that he saw it, tho solo individual of
its species, standing alone in a scene
of solitary horror, on the middle of a
naked, blasted plain, surrounded by a
circle of mountains, the whole area of
which was covered with the skeletons
of birds, men and beasts. Not a ves
tage of vegetable life to be seen within
tho contaminated atmosphere. Even
fish died in the water.
Divorces.
The general conference of the Meth
odist Church, which recently sat at
Memphis, passed a resolution recom
mending an amendment to the book
o f discipline, prohibiting Ministers
from performing the marriage ceremo
mony for any divorced party whose
husband cr wife is living.
Dr. Bard’s printing material has ar
rived, and the “'True Georgian ” will be
issued at an earlier day than was an
ticipa’ed. His Office will be in the
Georgia Loan Building, on Broad
street. The Doctor will soon enter the
ring, and then we’ll see the fur fly.—
He looks to be in splendid fighting
trim.
Later accounts from Oregon claim
the success of the entire Democratic
ticket in that State. The Legislature
is also probably Democratic by a small
majority.
