THE LETTER.*
TO THE CHII.DBSN:
Clnldren who real my lay,
Thus much 1 have to say:
Each day and every day
Do wlial is right!
Right things in great aud email!
Then, though the sky should fall,
Sun, moon aud stars and all,
You should have light.
This further, I would say:
Be you tempted as you may,
Each day.and every day.,/
Speak what is true!
True things, in great and small
Then, though the sky should fall,
Sun, moon and stars and all,
Heaven' would show through.
Life’s journey, through and. through,
Speakiug what’s just and true,
Doing what’s right to do
Unto one and all,
When you work and when you play,
Each day aud every day;
Then peace shall glide your way
Though the sky should fall.
FOR TEACHERS.
higher standard of ti aching ability
and special preparations than is de
manded in the country schools,
though they do not show up their'
good fruits to a very great extent
simply by neglecting their duties as
t-icher. A teacher or parent wl o
tails to doal| in his power towards
bringing up children so as to develop
them into rrue men and wotueii cotuj
mits a crime against posterity and
will be called on to answer at , the
bar of eternal justice for the awf.,1
clime, whereas it should be their
chief concern to develop and polish
them for a l igher existence. They
an’t do it thougli without some help
from others.
The teacher who h s ceased to
grow is dead already. The teacher
who lacks spirit, who possesses hut
ittle individuality has p obably been
lead for sometin e. M tb scholar
ship alone will not make a successful
teacher. To this must be added a
truo character and a professional
spirit born ol a desire to be the best
teacher possible, and renewed and
strengthened by a careful and con
stant study of the fnndamental prin
cipals in education.

RILES OF POLITENESS FOR CHILDREN*
To be polite is to have a kind re
gard for the feelings of others.
Be as polite to your parents, broth
ers, sisters and schoolmates as you
are to strangers.
Look people failv ill the eyes when
yon speak to them or they spoak to
you.
Do not bluntly contradict any one.
Whispering, laughing, chewing
gum or eating at lectures, in school,
or at places of amusement, is rude
and vulgar.

out the help of some one else is a
very poor wav. When the teacher
has reaeher has reached the state
where he needs no holp in Reaching
then is the time for him to leave the
school rotitn and let some one else
till his place. It seems as if we have
some that have readied that state as
they do not care to gain any inforraa
tion or give any. So n any of us
neglect our duties more than we
should. Aae not sins of omission as
great as sms of commission win n
they can be prevented by a few
words or deeds ? How can any one
idle away these precious moments
and see ouo children growing up in
ignorance ? So many people see our
aud their children going down to de
struction aud ruin, and still they will
lift no warning hand to save them
from their bad habits.
There should be more attention
given to our young .men of this day
and time. Three girls are now grad
uating from our high schools to one
bo., and they are capturing all plao, s
of honor.
Teachers must keep up with the
demand of the times in order to
bi n g the children op in a way that
v. ill be Inst for them, or cIrc be rele
gated to the tear end in everlasting
obscurity. This good way can onl)
e found by attending meetings and
reasoning with learned and experi
enced teachers and people. An ex
perienced teacher who does not care
to help the inexperienced teanher and
give him all tiie light he can is whol
ly unfit for good work as a teacher.
We wish to urge upon our teachers
the need of thoroughness and defi
niteness in their work and not keep
your eye altogether on the small sura
of money you are to receive. “Be
your labor great or smajl, do it well
or not at all.”
Special preparations for the work
of teac'iers should be required. As
a rule the city teacher has a longer
term than the country teacher,
