the drummer was not to be halted.
'What line?’ he inquired. I thought

THE HORSELKKS AGE AT LAST.
When self propelling carriages
were first invented it was predieted
that tlie horse-drawn vehicle would
soon be a thing the past. The first
automobiles, electiually driven, were
heavy and clumsy and of great cost.
It was believed, however, that im
provements would speedily be made
and that a perfect and low-priced
“horseless” vehicle would soon be
evolved. But the perfected and pop
ular-priced automobile has been de
layed. The great difficulty was in
the storage batteries. The best
known batteries were too heavy, too
expensive in both time and money.
They were short-lived in service, and
it required a long time to recharge
them. The deterioration was rapid,
the usefulness of a cell being only a
few months.
Then came a succession of steam,
gasolene, compressed air and other
kinds of self-propelling vehicles,
many of them showing a high degree
of efficiency. But each has left some
thing to be desired.^ There are ob
jections to each of these types that
might be obviated if electricity were
the motive power. And now Mr.
Edison turns attention back to elec
tricity by the invention of a storage
cell which gives promise of revolu
tionizing things in the traction line.
The cell has been examined by J’rof.
Garrett P. Serviss, who thinks it will
fulfill the promises of the inventor.
A technical description of the new
cell would interest only professional
electricians. It will suffice laymen
to be^intormed mat the new battery
weighs about one third as much as
the old one, while possessing twice
the potenlialitv. The old battery
can raise its own weight through a
vertical distance of two to three
miles; the new one can raise its own
weight through a verticaldistanoe of
about seven miles. The old battery
weigh about 100 pounds per horse
power, and the new one less than 60
pounds tor equal energy. Mr. Edi-j
son promises that the new battery
will not cost more than the old one,
and probably not as ranch; and says
the new one does not deteriorate
with work. Constant renewal wi 111
not, therefore, he necessary.
One of the elements of the new
cell, Prof. Serviss says, is a sub
stance for which even a correct
