■plie decision of the cotton null
men of Georgia that they will re
move all cause for legislative inter
ference with child labor by praoti
cally abolishing it.altogether will go
a long way toward removing all
cause of complaint and will'esuhlish
the wisdom of southern employers
in avoiding coiitypeersy with legisla
live leaders. \
In most cases child labor lias been
forced upon the mills by (he per
sistenoe of parents in seeking ein
ployment for them. The oheauuesi
of itieir latior did not make up for
want of skill and losses resulting
from iuftdvertem-e and carelessness.
The mill men have decided that it is
better to get mdre skilled labor,
which they cau hold under better ae
countability, The additional fact
that the very short school term in
Georgia left these children idle
most of tbe year was another cause
leading to tlieir employment. The
mill men urge an lucrease of educa
tional advantages, and pledge them
selves to the*r share of the burden
of taxation.
Iii the new scheme agreed upon, to
take effect at once, no child under
twelve years of age will lie employ
ed at night, unless it has a widowed
mother to support; nor will children
under ten be employed under .any
circumstances. In effeut, it means
that child labor will he a thing of
the past.—The Atlanta Couslilu

Hi«» Grande, seventy miles southwest
■ if Alpine, Texas, a party of Ameri
cans discovered a large cave in
which were lying side by side the
skeletons of twenty six men. Far
tlier explorations of the cave reveal
ed several copper ami stone utenails
and milling tools. Stamped or cut
into the stone jars was the name
“Narvaez” and 'h.- fiignres 1526.
This disco'try has awakened the
greatest iuterest among the people
of this section Who are farailliar
with the early history of this part of
the country, and it is considered al
most conclusive proof that the skele
tons are those of members of the his
torical Narvaez expedition, which
was shipwrecked on .Malhado I-ltnds,
near Galveston Island, about 1535.
' Narvaez and eight nitn came to
the new world from Spain on an ex
pedition of exploration and m search
of gold. He and; many of his fol
lowers perished in the vicinity of
Galveston Island and the remainder
of the party, led by Gnbeza De Vaca,
started westward in the fall of 1535,
and four ot^them, including Gabezn
De Viva, finally reached California
Bancroft and oilier historians havi
differed widely as to what route Ca-
beza De Vaca and his party follow
ed oil their trip td California, but
the discovery of the skeleton,s to
get her with the relics lieuilng tin
name of Narvaez and thevlate 1526,
is uliiiost conclusive proof that the;
belonged to the ill-fated expedition
and that they went to California b\
the southern route.
The skeletons are in a remarkable
g >od state of ursservation and sev
eral of them have been brought It,
Alpine. The cave will be further
explored in search tor otiier hiatov
ical relics. It is supposed that tin
men either died of hunger or wort
massacred by Indians.,—Cincinnati

Tlie official fig ires of the control
the South African war from 1899 to
1902 are given'by the British chan
cellor of the exchequer as $714,035-
000. This total' embraces afl thttl
has lieen spent up- to the present f
time and all that will be spent, uc-Broughton St.,Bainbrtflge,G«
cording to recent estimates- to tlie
end of the fiscal year in 1902. The
war iu China from 1900 to 1602 is
estimated to cost $28,390,000, the
aggregate of two wars carried on at
the same time with, $24,250,000 of
interest added beiug $765,585,000,
This does not lllol .de the cost at
two other “small” wars Jiegun and
ended while fighting was in progress
in South Africa and China—namely,
the formidable war in Ashanti and
the military expedition in Somali
land. These together can hardly
have cost less than $9,000,000.
From which it appears that the bur
den imposed on British taxpayers by
actual fighting in three years is over
$775,000,000. E pi pi re is doubtless
a brilliant thing, but it comes high
at tiiis price.
In his reient speech in the com

Sir Michael Hicks-Beach gave his

The official view, V thus appears,
was that the issue raised by the ulti.
