THE EYE QF_AN ARTIST*

Than a Sailor's. OiMte. J
Mr. N. Chevalier, the well knowri
artist who accompanied the late Duke
of Edinburgh on many of his travels,
was once going from Dunedin to
Lyttelton, New Zealand, by steamer*
Anxious to catch the earliest glimpse
of the coast he went on deck at dawn
and wns alarmed to see that the vessel
was heading stinlght ou to the land.
Calling the officer’s attention to the
fact, he was told that It was only a
fog hank. The artist maintained his
point, but the second officer looked
and confirmed his mate. - ,
« The Rrtlst then sale}: “Well, gentle,
pten, I will hack my. artist’s eye
Vgulust yonr sailor’s uye, and 1 say
that whut you mistake for a. fog, bank
Is a low rajige of blits, and there Is a
range of mountains appearing above
them." i ,
But he was only laughed at. until:
the captain coining on deck found In
the growlug light that the artist >vas
right nnd the seamen wrong. The Vus,
sel was out of Its course, nnd there
wns ouly Just time, to avert disaster,
The helmsman was dlsmlssifil in dis

The, cause was discovered fitte* A
commercial traveler had brought 0 box;
of magnets on board and deposited
them In k stern cabin, causing whut
blight have been a fatal deflection of
the compass. 1
To return to the question of Inter-
pretatlon, the artist was dealing with
the appearances which bis eye was
tuained, to see and Ids mind to Inter
pret. A speck on the horizon might
have remained a mere speck to hint
tong after the sailors bad interpreted
the speck Into a vessel of deUuite rig.
There can bo little doubt that the
j trained eye Is accompanied by a sort
of mental seeing, an Instinct outrun
ning optics.
