ANOTHER WIND STORM.
Mass Meeting at Jefferson fo Settle
Institute Muddle Adjourns
Without Action.
Special to The Winder Ncw.c
About two hundred citizens and
ladies of Jefferson met in the court
house Monday evening in an effort
to harmonize matters pertaining to
the school situation at Martin Insti
tute.
A committee on resolution report
ed promptly, asking that the cit
izens use every effort to quell the
pending litigation where it is, and
that the trustees make out and pub
lish a detailed statement of the r< -
eeipts and disbursements of Martin
Institute.
First speech was made by J. E.
Randolph, mayor, who in a few
brief words impressed upon the au
dience the importance of harmony
from educational and business stand
point.
Rev. (J. 1). Stone followed with
a happy talk expressing himself as
delighted to have an opportunity to
pay only $1.50 per term incidental
fee, and stating that he would give
$lOO.OO to Martin Institute if the
Trustees would make it a prepar
atory school and raise $25,000
Further speeches were made by
M. R. Crystal, ,J. A. B. Malmffy
and Proffessor Hill. The speeches
up to this time had been harmonious
and all seemed quiet and in a fair
ly good way to start a wave for
sober thought and harmonious
action.
Col. John C Turner then arose
and all was quiet. He told how our
forefathers se pc rated themselves
from the mother country because of
taxation without representation;
how as a matter of justice to the
people they should have some pow
er in the selection of the trustees of
Martin Institute, since they have
$lO,OOO invested as a gift from the
city of Jefferson. He condemned
life- tenure in office and asked that
School Dis'i iet No. 1 he permitted
to elect three of the nine memlxirs
of the board of trustees, the mayor
of the city of Jefferson be a member,
the other five to be elected by the
people for a term of live years each,
one member elected each year after
the first by the eight members of
tli ‘ board then in office.
lie demanded this and said that
nothing short of this would satisfy.
Col. .1. S. Ayers, member of the
hoiird of trustees, then made reply,
referring to Mr. Turner as an aspir
ant for the honors of truteeship, and
pointing him out as having become
disgruntled because he had never
been so honored Col. Ayers de
nied his power as a faithful trustee
to withdraw from his charge and
accede to the demand of the oppo
sition, and declared that he could
not-withdraw as a trustee and feel
that he was other than a traitor to
his trust. He summarized the status
of the suits now pending in court
against Martin Institute, expressing
his absolute confidence in the court
rendering a decision in favor of the
institution.
The resolutions were rarely touch
ed upon during the progress of the
discussion. They were finally
adopted upon motion.
Hon. 11. \V- Bdl, as a trustee,
stated that the statement called for
would not l>e published except upon
the concurrent action of the board of
trustees, saying that Martin In
stitute should not be discrimi
nated againt, and showing that
other school districts had not been
required to make a statement and
therefore Martin Institute sh mid
not 1h i required to do so.
Rev (i- I). Stone then sought to
change the spirit of the meeting by
suggesting and offering a motion
that the public school of Jefferson
be instituted and that Martin Insti-
