The Old South
ern Mammy.
In another column you will find
a tribute fi>iui Dr. Walker to the
rare old antcbelluni mammy, who
is fast disappearing from the face of
this earth and leaving us only recol
lections of a unique condition and
civilization unparalleled in the his
tory of the world. This good old
negro woman represented the best
element of her race.
The contemplation of tier death
will cause many of our older citiz
ens to look backward to a period in
the history of our country, that
tried men’s souls.
The faithfulness of these old dar
kies will never be forgotten. If the
younger generation would follow
the example of our old time darkies
there would Ire no race trouble star
ing us in the face.
Dr. Broughton
Called to London.
Dr. Lcn G. Broughton has been
invited to the pastorate of Christ
church, liondon, and there was a
great gathering at the Baptist Tab
ernacle in Atlanta, composed of
some of the city’s best and most
prominent citizens to protest against
this distinguished divine leaving.
Dr. Broughton has done a great
work for Atlanta and Georgia, and
Atlantians are always loth to give
np a good thing when they know it.
The great church that he has fost
ered and built up, together with the
Christian and benevolent institu
tions, connected there with, marks
him, as a remarkable man, endowed
with strength of mind, force of
character, and sufficient enthusiasm
to accomplish great things. Dr.
Broughton may be considered a
sensational preacher by some people,
and he has no doubt stirred up con
siderable opposition among the ranks
of the wrong doers, who have often
felt the heavy blow of his moral
sledge hammer, he has neverthe
less left the impress of his strong
mind and character upon the people
of Atlanta and Georgia, and has
already built for himself an endur
ing monument.
Judging a man in the light of his
accomplishments, Dr. Broughton
has been a great success, and Geor
gia needs more men of his calibre.
I have no doubt our capitol city
thinks herself quite as important as
London, and the gate city of the
South, the greatest country on earth,
can’t aflord to relinquish such an
asset as Dr. Broughton even to the
metropolis of the word.
