The Way cross Evening Herald very
kindly says:
“Albert Sweat is getting out a first

should be patronized and sustained.
It takes money to get out such a paper
as Sweat is giving the people of Coffee

The above is praise from a high
source, and we appreciate it very

* 1 Cracker "John Ferris, the veteran
etagedriver, who in the early fiftios
drove the stago on the overland
routo between Independence, Mo.,
and Santa Fo, in relating soldo of
Lis interesting experiences to a
group of friends the other day, told
this story, says a Fort Bliss (Tox.)
correspondent of the Now York
World:
“Tbo smallpox outbreak among
tho Comanoho Indians in tho year
1855, ” he said, “caused a groat stir
throughout the western country. I
carried tho first nows of that devas
tating plaguo to the outside world.
I was making one of my trips when
I stopped at. a small trading post on
the Neosho river. Great excitement
prevailed bcoause of an outbreak of
smallpox among tho Indians, who
thickly populated that section. Hun
dreds of the redskins had died.
“Smallpox had up to that time
been an unknown diseaso among
those Indians, and the outbreak was
tho result of onoof tho most terrible
schemes of revenge I have over seen
recorder 1 In the spring of 1855 two
young men, ..! - .so names I have for
gotten, went out to the plains for
the purpose of spending a few
months. Tho object of the trip was
for tho benefit of tho health of one
of them. They reached Council
Grove and resolved to remain there
a short time. They decided to get. a
tasto of buffalo hunting. They loft
Council Grovo early ono morning
on a two weeks’ hunt Thoy wero
mounted on good horses, which soon
attracted the covetous oyes of strag
gling hands of Indians.
“On tho third day they camo upon
a largo herd of buffalo and had an
oxciting chase. Tho invulid young
man killed ono of tho animals and
had dismounted to view his prize
when a big, strapping Indian rode
out of a clump of troos, shot tho
white man and scalped him. Tho
companion of tho murdered man
saw tho horrible crime, and think
ing that a similar fa to awaited him
put spurs to his horse and hoadod
for Council Grove. He was closely
pursued by the Indian. Tho white
man escaped and reached Council
Grovo in an exhausted condition.
Tho companion of tho murdered
man vowod to have rovengo upon
the whole tribo for the foul deed
which ono of tho members bad com
mitted, and ho kept his vow.
“Ho returned to his homo and
learned that the hospital thoro con
tained several ei)wes of smallpox.
He made tho acquaintance of ono of
tbo attendants of tho hospital and
induced tbo latter to soli him a
number of blankets which had boon
used to cover tho smallpox patients.
Ho then boxed the blankets and
shipped them to Council Grovo. Ho
went out and distributed thorn
among tho Indians. Tho diseaso
spread rupidly, anil they died by tho
score.
“Tho young man who brought out
and distributed tho blankets remain
ed at Council Grovo until he saw tho
outbreak of smallpox fairly started
and then returned to his homo. Tho
United States government sot on
foot an investigation ns to the cause
of tho outbreak, and it was discov
ered to -lio in tho blankets brought
from tho oast. A largo roward was
off' rod for tho arrost of tho young
man, but ho left tbooouiatryas soon
as ho found that ho was wanted.
Ho never returned, so fur as I know.**

look ahead and plan alied so that
when a favorable opportunity presents

much expenses and valuble time. A
