SATURDAY, APRIL I, 1899.
The war in the Phillipines in be
coming serious.
Atlanta is getting up a Jefferson din
ner, without the Bryan and Belmont
fixments.
A peculiarity of the Spanish people is
that none of their hoy babies born this
year aie being named I>ewey.
An actress up north shot herself
last week and fell, exclaming ‘“tis
love that kills,” dying, before the fool
killer could get in the last lick.
Summer has come, and ice cream
i getting in its work. A whole lami
ly, including the cook were poisoned
by eating it at Hawkinsville, last week.
Bishop Turner, a negro, in a speech
at Thomasville, Ga., last week, said
negroes should not take up arms for
this country. If this is true they
should not live here either.
A man over in Kausas recently kill
ed five of his children fjecjipsi; lm. liurt
~ii upviflTel with his wife. The lynchers
in that district seem to be neglecting
their business, for he still lives.
The announcement is made that
Huwance Springs, Fla. are in full blast.
That may be so, but Baskin's Spring
up in Coffee can beat 'em as a health
resort and let ’em shuffle the cards.
Bryan and Belmont are using some
salty terms of expression in regard to
each other’s Democracy. Belmont
says Bryan is a populist and Bryan
says Belmont is not a good democrat.
The Queen Regent is said to have
seized some newspapers in Spain last
week because they published a rumor
of her intended marriage. Perhaps
her auger was because the rumors
were not true.
Old John Sherin in was reported
dead last week but it was a mistake.
We did not grieve when Horace Gree
ley died, nor will we when John Sher
man is dead. He has no love for
Southern people.
Twenty-three negroes with a leader,
organized for a race war near Texarka
na, Ark., last week, with a determina
tion to kill out the whites. Siuce the
oganization dead negroes have been
found all over the woods.
And now Atlanta wants a summer
encampment of the regular army,
with good prospects of getting it.
Some of her citizens have been to
Washington to see the Secretary
about letting the soldiers stay at her
house awhile.
The Georgia Fruit Grower’s Associa
tion met in Macon last week to deter
mine how bad the fruit crop had been
injured. They concluded that the
crop would bring us over until persitn
moos and possums were ripe. Allah
be praised, the country is safe!
Atlanta wants old Tom Reed to
come up there and lecture, and is in
the dumps because he doesn’t do so^
every"
■Mfuian that comes along, black or
white. Tom Reed is no friend to
Georgia, nor to any* one else except
trusts and republicans.
Revenue officers in Putman county
arresfbd Mrs. Walker, a well known
woman of that county, and three
grown daughters last week, for run
ning a whiskey still without license.
The still was in full blast, and the
ladies had on hand about, one thous
and gallons of genuine tangle-foot.
They will bo tried.
An old bachelor bought a pair of
socks and found attached to one of
them a slip of paper with these words:
**l am a young’lady of twenty and
would like to correspond with a bach
elor with a view to matrimony.”
and address were given. The
bachelor wrote, aud in a few days got
this letter: “Mama was married
twenty years ago. The merchant
you bought those socks from evident
ly did not advertise, or he would have
sold them long ago. Mama handed
me your letter and said possibly I
might suit you. lam eighteen years
Old.”
A Low Down Swindle
The man, woman, child or liotten
tot that will ask a newspaper man to
send him, she, they or it his paper
and then after it has been sent sever
al years or months, taken out of the
office by the one to whom addressed,
he, she, they or it refus.-s to pay for
said paper, telling the postmaster they
don’t want it, shows a desire on their
part to swindle, and in the eyes of
law and justice are just as guilty as a
newspaper man would he if he should
order a bushel of potatoes sent to him
from a farmer’s barn every month for
a year, and then after he had gotten
and used the potatoes refuse to pay
for them. If one is a swindle both
are swindles, and the Jury says so.
Sunday School Convention.
Owing to the fact that the 27th
District Sunday School Association
will hold its Convention at Dupont,
Ga., on the 3rd Sunday and Saturday
before in April, the time selected for
our county Convention also, we have
thought proper and correct to change
the time for holding the Coffee Coun
ty Sunday School Convention to the
first Sunday in May and Friday and
Saturday before. The Convention
will convene at Gaskin’s Spring Camp
Ground on Friday night, continuing,
its sesions there, until Saturday night,
and will adjourn to meet at the Meth
odist church at Douglas on Sunday
morning. Progrunis will be issued
in tritrw days.
Red headed Girls
Mr. D. B. English, of Waycross, has
an advertisement in to-day’s paper,
aud he has one also in the Self-Reli
ance, published in Waycross. The
contract with the two papers is that
the editors shall write each other’s
advertisements. The editor of Self-
Reliance will write one for us, and we
will write one for that paper. Ours in
this week’s Reliance will be about
red headed girls, and the one in the
Breeze is about D. B. English’s stock
of Millinery, Dress Goods, Ribbons
and everything else humanity wants.
Complaints have been made to
us this week from several sources,
that our paper failed to reach its des
tination before the week after its pub
lication. We are very sorry our ar
rangements to have the paper out re
gularly on time have failed, hut think
wc can and will find and apply the
remedy before a great while. It is
hard to get out of the old ruts, hut she
must come on time.
